anemones and magnesium

Ron Popeil

Love them clownfish.
in the last four months or so, ive really been noticing a dramatic loss of magnesium ive never experienced before. as a result certain species of sps have suffered.

and while my system is only some twenty gallons less than when i was running a single 120 gallon, there are some noticeable problems that didnt seem to be present in the years i did essentially the same maintenance routines. im trying to find what could be using it so much more rapidly than ever before.

my question is about large anemones and their impact on magnesium levels. i have three anemones around the 15-20 inch mark. do anemones even use magnesium in large quantities? could they be responsible for the constant drain?

First I've heard of it.

Granted, I'm not an SPS guy so magnesium isn't one of my heavily monitored levels though I can't recall reading it in any of my books.

That's certainly something to ponder though... I just picked up a haddoni that I'm growing out some in my 30 to move into a 75. Since I don't really have any other power users of magnesium in my tanks, there's no reason I couldn't keep an eye on this over the next few months and see if the big 'nems are the cause.
