angel compatability

i have a 60 g lps zoo tank. mastly acan blasto, hammer, candy cane...the ussual stuff plus some zoos. can i put a flame or coral beauty angel fish in there? or will it nip at my corals?

Usually a flame or coral beauty is a 50/50 chance of being reef-safe. Some won't touch anything and some will go after lps and softies. I have a Potter's Angel that I took a chance with and he has been very good. I haven't seen him nip at any of my corals (which is mostly lps and softies) and none of my corals have shown effects of nipping. I have had him for about 7 months now.

Generally, they are more likely to go for the "puffy" corals like open brains or cynarina (sp?). My flame didn't bother the open brain but the Herald's angel thought I'd put it in there for his lunch

Sometimes you will see them "nipping" at a coral but they are actually going after a little decaying slime which is a good thing IMO as long as it doesn't cause the coral to be closing up

Also sometimes an angel will nip at one clam but not bother another. I guess some look like dinner & some don't.

I had a potters and he would occasionally nip at one brain in the tank. This could have very well been due to something on the coral or maybe even a piece of hair algae growing right between two polyps. It seemed to only do it to one spot on the coral which leads me to believe it really wasnt trying to eat the coral tissue. Take that as you wish.

I have had a coral beauty for several months now and she is a model citizen. She is fat and happy off of the fish food I feed.

In that small of a tank, and with so much meat around, I would go with a CB over a Flame IMHO.

Keeping the fish well feed will give you a better chance but always be prepared and have a plan to get the fish out at the first signs of trouble as nothing is a guarantee.

I have also been considering a flame angel. Is one typically worse than the other ( flame angel vs. coral beaty ) at nipping? And what foods has anyone had success at keeping them "full" trying to prevent nipping?
Thanks for the help,

Again, keeping full MAY help but nothing is a guarantee. It can even take years before it aquires a taste for your corals so your never really out of the woods so to speak.

Must have a plan in place ( ie: a good fish trap ) to get it out if becomes a problem. If you don't have a good proven way to get it out then best just to skip the idea of a Flame Angel altogether.

Trying to compare a flame vs. a beauty really doesn't matter as both are capable and a total gamble every time.

I have a Cherub Angel in my 29 gallon w/ 9 LPS's and it dosen't mess w/ any of them. It's a small Angel for your tank, but just something to consider...

I have had a flame angel for two years and it always nip at the sps. That was fine with me because it doesnt seem to hurt the sps.
But I recently acquired a very nice favia speciosa and the angel started to eat on it. After seeing the flesh hanging on my favia, I ended up draining the whole tank and pull the angel out. I've got a zombie angel.

I've owned 3 flame angels and now a coral beauty. Never has one touched a coral if well fed. By well fed I mean adequate life in the tank for them to forage on

What are the signs of nipping? Silly question, I know...

well, the fish start to look at the corals and then take a nip at it. and it continues to do so 500times a day.

LOL, I thought you were talking about some signs. Like bit out pieces or something.

One sign can be a coral that decides not to expand it's polyps any more. Though I'd hate to blame every incident of that on nipping

I don't no about the others but I have had swallowtail angels with LPS and clams for years with no problems.
