angel help

Ok, I'm planning a new tank.... 125g or up. I currently have a Blue Hippo Tang, Yellow tang, 3 Fire fish, and a Flame Angel. My question is, is it possible to get a large Angel to live with the dwarf Flame? And if so what size tank would it be ok? My girlfriend really wants one of those "Pretty Fish". So do I, but I don't want it to cause problems. Oh, this is for a Reef tank.

If you are going with a reef tank you pretty much rule out the possibility of a large angel. The Genicanthus family would be a good choice.These guys

Yes- agreed with jpslick. Also 125 is no where close to being big enough for a big angel.

large angels are a huge risk with reefs. to me its not worth the gamble.

If you are wanting a big angel go for something bigger than 125. most of them get over a foot and a reef tank full of live rock won't over enough swimming room. Try a 180 or something maybe 5 or 6 feet.

Genicanthus are amazing angels. They only get 8" average and they are planktivores so they are pretty well reef safe if you keep them well fed. I would keep them in no less than a 5 foot tank though. I wish my tank was 6 foot with the fish I have now.

well I'm gonna beg to differ on this one, and say that a majestic should be ok in a 125 or quite a while. Just make sure he is at least as big as flame, preferably bigger. The two tangs will kick up stink for 24hrs, but the flame is the one to watch....... his aggression will take at least a week to subside - if the majestic is bigger, then the flame will just display and the majest will just ignore it...... but if they are equaly sized or if the majestic is smaller, then the majestic could well be killed within a week

As far as the tank size....... it will take acouple of years to reach a size where it begins to outgrow a 125..... a 125 is 72"x18"x24" right? effective aquascaping and good water flow is the key here - and so long as you don't add anymore big boddied fish (as in wrasse, tangs, b'flies, angels etc.) then you should be ok. If the majestic starts nudging up to around 7 or 8 inches, then it is time for either a new tank, or a trade in...........

should be reef safe with all but the most tasty LPS etc.

I think MattSilvester and I have had this discussion before- I will respectively disagree with him. I do not think most aquarist have the luxury of upgarding tank size significantly in a year or two. I think most will stay with the tank they have for as long as they can. I also think we should always consider our prospective fishes natural size and habits. Large angels like Majestics will get big, and a 125 will not be suitable for a larger adult. Sure, it will be ok for a year or two, but ultimately, it wont work. Furthermore, I think dominant fish like large angels should have a big territory to patrol.

THIS IS ALL MERELY MY INTERPRETATION- MY OPINION ONLY!!!

I think many people can keep large angels in 125s, but from my experience, it is unsuitable.

Your Yellow will harass a new Tang
A Flame will harass ANYTHING new!
Most aggressive should ALWAYS go in last


A Foxface would be okay as most are left alone [Venomous]
A reef safe Trigger like the Bluethroat [may not be safe w/ everything]
How about a school of Anthias [3]
A Purple Tang is possible, though it is the same genus as the Yellow...People keep them both but make sure the Purple is bigger...It will end up meaner in the end

Also, you may not want to add another fish after the Purple

ok, thanks for the help. It all makes sense one way or the other. I know I want to go with a 6 foot tank, just not huge. And it will be inwall, so upgrading later is not an option. How about a powder blue tang? And I can put them in the new tank in any order. The old one will still be set up so I can switch over slowly. The Yellow Tang was the last one that I've added and I didn't realize the Flame was going to get so mad. He kept messing with the yellow for the first day but has been fine ever since. Can't we all get along!

I almost suggested a PBT...But wasn't sure how experienced you were...They can be touchy, difficult fish and need to be placed in qt for at least 4 weeks....98% of them will have ich..
They also get aggressive, a good match for the fish you have

I wouldn't put a PBT in a 125 either, they need big tanks just like the large angels. Sure they don't get as big as the larger angels, but they like to swim and a 125 isn't going to give a PBT enough swimming space.
