angels in reef tank? mostly SPS

I see a lot of threads and tanks that have angels in their reef tank, SPS too.

I am wondering which Angels you guys would consider most reef safe and which are the worst?

I have a 180 gallon tank and I am looking to possibly adding:

Either a Red Stripe Angelfish or a Flame Angelfish.
A Regal Tang

I will be adding both when they are small

Genicanthus angels would be more reef safe than other angels. there'll be some risk involved with angels in reef tank. some angels might nip and you might not see daytime PE on some sps. i would personally not take the risk if you're really into sps.

Yeah I want this tank to be mostly SPS but I really like the look of the Regal tangs.

regal tangs aka hippo tangs (paracanthurus hepatus) are reef safe.

but if you're talking about regal angels (pygoplites diacanthus), they may nip some corals.

mistyped there, I meant regal angels. Regal tang is too big for my tank, or at least what is recommended.

I really do like the regal angels though. Do you think it is best to add the angels before the corals or after most of the SPS is in there?

Had wantanabi and swallow tail angels in the past never had issues with them.

i would personally add the corals first. i'd suggest to quarantine the fish as well.

I also had a few angels over time and while most were dwarf ones and fairly good with corals my best overall angel for getting along with other fish, getting along with corals and being the most hardy was by a long shot my female Swallowtail Angel. Beautiful fish.

I have a 6 inch emperor and a 4 inch queen in my mostly sps tank. They do nip a little at the sps, causing less pe, but the sps are growing great with good color. Once in awhile a tip will get bit off, but no serious damage. Zoas and acans, on the other hand, are a no-go in my tank. The queen likes acans and not sure which one eats the zoas, but most are gone. There one day, gone the next.

I have 2 regal angel, a Watanabe angel pair and three Flame angels in my320. They all doing fine. No nipper of SPS, LPS, Clams or soft coral. All my Xenia are gone however.

awesome, thanks guys. I may get a regal tank if I can find a good deal on one.
they are not easy to get to live in our tank. See the Regal angel primer in the reef fish forum before you buy one. Definitely reserve for expert who can go the extra mile to get them to adapt to captivity. Failure rate is almost certain if you buy one and toss him into your DT

What about a spotbreast angel? They are supposedly 100% reef safe. Iv been considering one for my tank as i need a showpiece fish. I have a flame in my 170. When he was in my 90 he used to go after everything but in the 170 there is so much more swimming space and rock for him to pick over he totally ignores everything including clams and lps which were his reef crack in my old tank.
