angels picking at clam?

Well my flame angel is pickingat my derasa lately.

When should I be worried? It doesn't seem like it's taking chunks out of him...

I would say so too. Even though some angels eventually quit doing that I wouldn't take a chance. Angels and tangs like to pick on clams to eat the "juice" the clam excrets while under stress. The content is highly nutritius and has lots of phytoplankton in it.

IMO when a fish starts to nip it wont stop.

clams house zooxanthellae in there mantles not phytoplankton.

BUMP

I had this happen with my yellow coris wrase 2 days ago. I removed the wrase but my clam still is reluctant to fully extend it's mantle on one side. How long does it usually take before the go back to normal?

Actually, zooxanthellae are a type of dinoflagellate, and when free-living they are indeed a type of phytoplankton.

Now as far as them being "excreted" in some "juice" by clams that are under stress... Never heard any such thing anywhere, and can say with much confidence that that's not true. The juice is simply mucus, which clams, corals, and even your own nose produces when irritated.
