I bought a Anularis angel 2 days ago and hes about 5 inches. Its very shy, which ive heard is normal for at first, but he hasnt eating anyhting pr seemed interested. Is this normal for a newly introduced angel like this?

thanks

Yes. What are you trying to feed it? Where is it (QT? DT?) any tankmates?

Ive tried feeding it pellets, frozen mysis, frozen blood worms, live brine, I put some red agar in there that he hasnt touched. Hes really only coming out right now when the lights are off, very scared of me. Hes in a 125 gallon holding tank with live rock with a couple wrasses.

Have you tried leaving the room to see if he'll eat when you aren't there? Also, try with the lights out. New fish don't appreciate bright lights, IME. Also try minced raw seafood meats like scallop or shrimp. By agar do you mean seaweed? Tie it to a rock near where he hides and leave the room.

Yeah, ive tried all of that. Yeah, its a red macro algae that I guess ORA cultures. My tangs love it, I put some in to see if he would eat it. I guess Ill just have to wait and see what happens.

I'd keep the lights off or low, and avoid watching him. Is there plenty of cover for the angel, to help it feel secure? Any chance the wrasses are outcompeting the angel for food, or bullying it? If so, consider dividing the tank or removing the wrasses. Maybe try some live food or a chunk of live rock with sponge growing on it?

Lots of good advice here, new angels are often stressed and larger ones (yours isnt huge yet) often are off feed when they come in. I really like to start with smaller fish or juveniles and let them grow up in a system but that isnt going to help you now. I like to leave new arrivals alone and do everything I can to get them to settle down. A darkened tank was mentioned and is a good idea as is leaving lots of feeding opportunities (nori on a clip, gel food in a feeding screen) available for the fish to feed when it is ready. Keep trying different foods and it should start feeding when it is comfortable. Having lots of liverock to nip at is good and as has been mentioned these fish need lots of good cover and hiding places to settle in. I have found few angels can resist mysis shrimp for long, and new life spectrum pellets usually work well for me but every fish is going to have a preference for something.

How long has the tank been up and running?

The tank he is in now has been running for a year. He has a lot of live rock cover and it pretty much has already started chasing the other fish out of his cave when they wander in there so im pretty sure hes bossing them around, not the other way. Thats a good idea about the live sponge, will probably try that and Im going to just try running the blue lights for a few days.

I just want to see him start eating before I start medicating him incase hes carrying parasites.
