Here I go and set up my 400 gallon system. The tank is glass 100†x 25†x 26†that I purchased from a LFS. The tank is drilled with 10 holes in the back. It has two 2†overflow bulkheads, two 1†return bulkheads, two 1†supply bulkheads for closed loop systems and four 1†bulkheads for the closed loop returns. I painted the back of the tank flat black and all PVC fitting in the tank are black. Four supply bulkheads are fitted with Loc-Line flexible tubing. The other two supply bulkheads are fitted with straight 1†black PVC pipe with a 45 degree fitting at the end.
The sump is glass 60†x 24†x 16†made by a local glass shop. It has three compartments; skimmer section 24â€Â, return section 18â€Â, and a 18†refugium section. It has two 1†baffles between the skimmer section and the return section. I chose to place the return in the middle. The refugium and skimmer sections each have a 1†bulkhead leading to a floor drain in case I want to drain them. The return section has two 1†bulkheads leading to the return pump. I also placed a gate valve on one pipes coming from one of those blulkheads so that I can drain the return section.
The tank will be built into a wall in my basement with an aquarium room behind it that is approximately 10 feet by 9 feet. I set up two 2†floor drains below the tank and a 3†floor drain in the middle of the aquarium room. I also wired the room with four 20 amp circuits. Two of the circuits are hooked-up to a 12 KW power back-up system that runs using natural gas.
The stand is custom built of 2x4 pine and plywood. All surfaces, which are exposed to water, were covered with cement board and painted with moisture resistant paint.
The canopy is also made of cement board and painted.
