Another Canadian Reef! 600 gallon Penninsula!

From my understanding, you can mention names, but if you start promoting and plugging lots of info, they hassle and want them to be sponsors.

But there is nothing against brands or naming where you got something. And they don't like you posting off site competition or other forum websites. But you can say a company and names and people can Google websites if need be

Hello everyone. It's been a few days since I posted. While I wait for the glass to arrive, much progress has been made on the support structure underneath the tank. The supports will go in an unfinished room in my basement.

There has been quite a bit of discussion on how to support the weight of the tank. I decided to build a large wood structure to spread the weight out over a larger surface rather than a few jack posts on a few small points on the floor.

I started by re-enforcing the 4 floor joists directly beneath the tank. Two issues are apparent. Unfortunately the joists run parallel to the long axis of the tank and the space under the tank is only about 7.5 feel long meaning I dont have access to directly underneath about 1 ft of the tank.

I doubled up the 2 x 10 joists and also sandwiched a piece of 3/4 inch plywood in between the 2 x 10s. This composite design will make the joists several times stronger. I did this a full 10 feet meaning the composite joists entend 2.5 feet beyond the length of the tank. Since I have no access past 7.5 feet, I used a 9000 grade construction adhesive to bond the composite joist design together along the full length. Unfortunately because of a steel beam. I was unable to slide a full 10 foot 2 x 10 into the joist space. I cut it, placed the two pieces, then added an extra piece of plywood to coiver the joint. I then added some headers in 3 spots where 3 cross beams will be placed.

I then cut a 3 pieces of 3/4 inch plywood to fit up along side the headers and around the joists, but hang down perpendicular to the joists. I glued and screwed them to the headers and then sandwiched another header to the other side of the plywood.

I then sandwiched two more 2 x 10s on either side of the plywood hanging down to create 3 very strong beams to run across all 4 joists in 3 seperate areas along the length of the tank.

I then created a framework of 2 x 6s to sit directly below the cross-beams and transfer the weight onto the concreate floor. I bonded the framework together with plywood to make it all one piece and then attached it to the beams. In essence I created a single structure from the joists to the floor to support the weight of the tank. One thing I can tell you is this thing is super strong!!

The next step will be to run electrical and set up my sump system.

Thanks for sharing!.....Gives me a few more options with my build.

Just wondering where the 2x6 stud walls are in relation to the ends of the tank?

John from NAFB is making it. I got several estimates across Canada and the US. I also read a lot of reviews. John was the best fit for me.

John is on my shortlist at the moment.......lot's of pics please ;). will there be any Starphire?

There are three walls, one directly under the overflow end of the tank, another in the middle (about 4 feet away), and the third at about 7.5 feet. The tank will cantilever about 1 to 1.5 feet. The re-enforced joists extend ten feet, so about 1.5 feet past the end of the tank.

Yes. The three viewing sides will be in Starphire.

I'll keep the thread updated with John's progress once he starts to build. Lukas said he will take lots of photos. I also had a decent quote from Aquarium illusions in Edmonton. They estimated the shipping as well. Tom from ORG looked at a couple places as well, but the estimate and the ability of John to build on site worked best for me. John has built large tanks for Lukas before, so I have no worries.

Crazy isn't it. Yeah, I designed it myself and had it constructed locally.

I skimmed through your thread this morning. I'm amazed how similar your build and equipment are to mine, right down to the rails to mount your lights and use of biopellets. You have a beautiful tank. I was also glad to see how well the water flows with your vortech pumps.

Thanks... it is beautiful to be here among so many reef-addicted with a swimming pool in the living room!
