DIY Ozone and activated carbon reactor

Hi folks, here is my not yet finished ozone and carbon reactor. Pictures show about how far I have come.

Maybe I haven't been looking hard enough, but I haven't really found any good, cheap and simple ozone reactors that support carbon filtration of both water and air. Since acrylic tubing and needle wheel pumps can be gotten cheap on ebay or from China I thought it would be worth it to try a design and build myself. The pump I use right now is borrowed from my Deltec APF 600 skimmer, which is not currently in use.

About the design:

Positive:
1. Good injection and mixing of water and ozone with a needle wheel venturi pump.
2. Carbon filtration of both water and air.
3. Easy to operate, drain and clean when placed right.
4. Supports adjustable and precise throughput, and on/off cycles without drain back.

Negative:
1. Very tall, not practical under a tank or in any cramped spot.
2. Designed for slow throughput.

The main reactor tube is divided into two chambers: The lower is the ozone chamber and the upper is the carbon chamber. Water comes in near the bottom, in the ozone chamber. A needle wheel venturi pump mixes the water while injecting ozone laden air. The pump doesn't add new water to the chamber it only recirculates the water that is already there. So a separate feeding pump us used for the throughput of the reactor. After having taken a few spins, the air and water rise up into the carbon chamber. The water overflows out and opening in the side and the air goes out the open top.

In the second picture you can see the two 110 mm tubes I bought on Ebay. They are 400mm long. The Deltec needle wheel pump is on the right side.

Here are some of the unions I use. The first is the large 110mm union that separates the two main chambers. It has an acrylic hole plate with some mesh on to hold up the carbon, but let air and water flow up.

The second is for the overflow exit.

Here I show how I make bulkheads into the reactor with PVC unions and ordinary PVC glue.
