I'm not sure how people have fared with Flames, but I just returned a Coral Beauty to my LFS yesterday after she destroyed and elegance and was setting in on cabbage leather. I had her for a month with no problems, then one day...same old story.
My Flame nips at my Xenia, but not enough to do anything, it is still spreading. I have Mushrooms and Zoas and have never seen him nip at them. I've had him for over a year.
my flame has never eaten any of my corals....he like nips at them..but then again he nips at EVERYThing...sand...bare rock...nipped my emerald crab once (dont think he do that again)....
I haven't found anything short of a large golden puffer that will eat mushrooms. I never thought that my flame did much damage until I gave him away - the SPS extended more and grew quicker the instant that he was gone.
My flame angel has quite the appetite. No problem with any of the LPS, mushroom or polyps in the tank, but I added a few SPS frags (a few acros and a birds nest). That darned fish was on them like a kid in a candy store. I have a larger green tipped staghorn that none of my fishes touch. (maybe it's the crab who lives there... funny watching a striped damsel try to hide in it and being chased away by the crab)

I had a large Volitan lion (Pterois volitans) about three years ago that would literally suck red mushrooms right off of the rock. It was crazy! I never had more than 5-6 at a time, and he never dessimated them. Then again, you would still find the occasional one floating around or something.
