tri retract my statement that it is a rocea after looking at the new pictures (ie: side on shot). A maxima it is, but its got a inhalant syphon opening and its mantle shape is more crocea like.

EXPEDITION, did you pick that clam up locally?
I'm only a few miles down the road and would love to find a new store to spend my money.

I was just there this weekend. I picked up a few angels for my son's 29. I might stop on the way home.

Well - I wasn't kidding when I said it could be difficult at times to tell crocea from maxima. Even I thought it was a max, but wasn't entirely sure. Now I'm thinking it's a crocea...
Take a look at the 6th picture down (click the thumb).

I KNOW these are both croceas because I took this photo at a clam farm in a tank that was full of only croceas. The one on the left looks like a match...
As I said earlier, sometimes croceas can have lots of scutes. BTW - occasional maxes have byssal openings just as large as that of crocea, too. Not many, but some.
Sorry for the flip-flop, but at least you have an answer now (I think).

some croceas do have ridges, and some maximas dont, which is causing the dilemma. In this case, with the shape of the shell and scutes, i think it is a maxima, with amantle that appears like a crocea.
