Another New Reefer

Hello Everyone

New reefer here in Rochester, actually for those of you that know the area I am down in Charlotte. And I started my 1st reef tank about 1 month ago.

I started with a 55gal All Glass, 2 MJ900's, and an Orbit 4x65 PC light fixture. I will be adding a CPR Bak Pak skimmer either this weekend or Tuesday of next week. I currently have 2 small false percs, and my clean up crew, all are doing very well.

So far I have been doing a TON of reading, as well as picking Tom's brain at TRS.

My question is of the 3 LFS who do you prefer and why? Which have you found to have the best quality livestock?

Of some of the questions I have posed to both TRS and CF I have often gotten conflicting awnsers as to what I will need in my setup, and why.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Greg

Welcome to URS. IMO i like TRS better Tom is easy to deal with, plus i'm a SPS junkie. Tom alway carry unique corals. I go to Rochester 1 or 2 times weekly, TRS alway my 1st stop.

Welcome Greg! In this hobby, there are many different ways to equip your tank, and there isn't always a "right" answer. You have to read and decide what option is right for your tank, because everyone's is different.....

Welcome Greg... You guys are comming out of the woodwork, Great, need to expand and take over the world..... In all seriousness there are some great minds here...Don't waste them.

Welcome to the URS. There's a lot of good info here. As far as your above question goes, I'd read up first and take anything a LFS says "with a grain of salt". Usually, this question sparks an argument and the thread is closed within a day or two. Hope this doesn't happen here :)

Thanks Everyone for the very warm welcome.

I will try and get some pics posted this weekend AFTER I finish painting the kitchen.

So far I also have a LARGE piece of LR that has a section with Green Star Polyps growing on it. Is there an easy way to remove the thick purple mat they are growing out of and moving it?
The LR they are on is one of the big pieces that make the base of my reef, and if possible I don't want my entire reef to be GSP, LOL

Greg

Thanks in advance for your help, and opnions

The thick purple mat is part of the coral, ... but I'll let Gary remind me of the correct name (because they aren't true stolons because the GSP's aren't a stoloniferous coral, right?). You can sometimes peel the mat off the rock w/o too much damage, but it's difficult on convoluted surfaces like LR.

And honestly, if you want a tank full of the stuff.. sit back and do nothing. It will. There's a whole lot of folks that won't even let that junk in their tanks.

pachyclavularia?
That's a guess. Gary can remind you, correct me. :)

Sometimes, you can find another coral that will outcompete it or keep it at bay.

JUNK? C'mon now!

if kept under control GSP can be very nice....makes a great grasslike floor in the tank if you let it grow on the sand.

Hello again everyone, and Thank You for the very warm welcome.

Well as I stated in my earlier posts I purchased my skimmer today. Picked up a CPR BakPak +2R, with the prefilter skimmer box.

We also picked up a small Yellow Tang, which my wife named Glen!!! LOL

So between Glen and the 2 false Percs thats my nieces named Nemo and Pearl, our little tank is slowly comming together.

I will be adding a link to a pic of the tank as it sits tonight.

Any feedback or sugestions on what you see are always welcome.

Greg
