Another Nuvo 16

I've been posting in all the other Nuvo threads so thought I might as well start mine. Its been up for about 3 weeks and added the first fish today.

I dont know how much LR is in there but its around 15-18lbs if I had to guess. There is one 20lb bag of live sand. The filtration is stock with some filter floss on top of the other media pads along with some carbon packs. I find the floss really affective as I change it about twice a week. I just stuff as much of it in the little area as possible. A nano koralia ph is in there for now but just ordered a mp10w and a tunze ATO unit.

I'm up in the air about lighting as I would like some SPS. Really like the Radion but not liking the price. I'll prolly go ahead and pull the trigger once I figure out a way to weld up some mounting brackets like the ones that are on there now. I dont want to hang the light if I dont have to so will try to see how fabbing up some clamps can be done.

Got these little guys from LA and they seems to be doing great. Ate the first time food hit the water.

I hope the stock lights will be bright enough to leave this little hammer on the bottom until I upgrade them. Got it from Divers Den at LA

This little guy didnt waste any time making a cave. Got this one pic of him as soon as he went in and then he was gone! I guess I kinda got lucky that he decided to make his home under one of the rocks that is in the front of the tank. I've been watching him throw tiny bits of shells out all night. I'll get him a goby or something to make friends with here before too long at that will be it for the fish. I'm going to add quite a few inverts over time and feel that 3 fish will be more than enough.

Got these from a local FS and thought they would be a good first addition. They have been in there for a little over a week. They are a tad big for the tank and may move them to another before its all said and done. It was my first and last time checking out the nearest FS since I am new to this area. All their fish/invert tanks were infested with aiptasia worse than anything I could ever imagine. They had a nice Store DT tank and frag tank but every other tank was like fields of aiptasia. I think they are more of a maintenace shop for people that use thier services than anything else as they didnt even carry snails. So, my first real grazer was an urchin which will be food for a pair of harlequin shrimp.

Nice setup. I bought a nuvo 16 last month too and added the 240 koralia ph, 20 lbs live sand, ~20 lbs live rock and filter floss. I just added some chemi-pure elite and decided to try out the $30 biocube skimmer.

I was wondering where to put my money next- wanted to upgrade the lighting too and was thinking of adding that ai nano or sol in the middle- the price is about 50% of the Orpheks or the Radion XR30w (even though that looks like an amazing unit).

I thought it was interesting that your next purchase was the mp10w and an ATO unit- I haven't had a reef tank in 10 years and I'm out of the loop- are those just for SPS corals? Is the radion xr30w that much better than the ai sol? I'm already thinking of upgrading to the nuvo 30 and if I'm going to drop that kind of money on a light I'd like to be able to use it on my next tank too.

Thanks!

I went ahead and ordered the mp10w since it is so easy to setup, can be used with the radion lighting if I go that direction, and it can link up with another mp W power head if I ever move it to another tank. I'm hoping the wave making power heads will get better with time just like this little pump and when they do I'll be able to use it in a larger tank and get a smaller one to replace it.

As for the Radion, it is just the most diverse light out right now but does have some software bugs from what I understand. It should be fully functional wirelessly in time. It will easily grow sps in a lot of different footprint tanks so will be able to move it if I ever decided to. I'll have to be careful not to burn anything if I do go with it though as they are really bright.

The Tunze auto top off unit is just a pretty good kit in my opinion since it comes with everything you need to set it up and the way it measures the water is prefered over a float my a lot of people. I've had floats get stuck in different applications so just wanted to stay away from them.

Well, the hammer coral is still just barely opening up. There is pretty good flow where its at so dont know if its just still adjusting or if it may need more light? Any ideas?

I was thinking of leaving it there for another day then move it up a little if it doesnt open on up.

Ok, Hammer was still just barely extending after 24 hours so I moved it up a tad closer to the lights and put it a little more in the direct flow of the koralia nano. After about 20 minutes it extended about twice the amount that it was previously extending. So, I'm still at a loss of what it needed more, flow or light? Divers Den LPS items are supposedly kept under 400 mhs so maybe needed more light and the flow just helped too. Thats my guess, any other opinions please?

I feel like I should go ahead and get the radion before adding any more corals way I'm not worried about the light. Was originally thinking of getting a third stock light at first but that wont cut it I dont think.

Well, pulled the trigger on the Radion. It should be here tomorrow with the mp10. So, time to start looking at some sps!

Looks good, I guess I'm in good company.. there weren't a lot of these here a couple of months ago, but it appears the Nuvo 16 is catching on.

I went to fish store looking for a 20-30g+ unit and just happened to see the last one they had and thought it looked really sleek so had to have it. The only thing I dont like is the overflows so far. They just dont seem to pull that much water with the stock pump so may update that as well. Many others have done it so may give it a try too. Everything else stock "can" work just fine for a softie tank in my opinion. I have read that some are keeping some lps with stock lights but since my hammer isnt acting as happy as I'd like I dont see how placing any on the bottom would be possible. Its looking much much better half way up the tank though.

I wonder how low I should start the Radion tomorrow? I'm thinking about 35% to start and by the time I'm at 45% I'll be able to put some sps in there at the top. I had a mixed 180g with 3 250mhs and 8 T5s for a long time before tearing it down for a move and never once did I put any SPS in there so am kind of excited.

Although I'm not new to keeping corals I have always just bought them and put them in the tank. I've never fragged or glued any to rocks so this will be a new experience all together since I wont be able to just put stuff in such a small tank. I'll have to place them on what rocks I have in the tank.

I've been looking at videos for fragging and it doesnt look too hard although I would hate to kill something on accident. Is super glue gel the best method or should I buy something designed for coral? I dont want any discs/plugs in the tank once I find good placement. Once the coral looks happy I will cut it and glue it to whatever is in that spot.

I cant either. Dont know exactly how I'm going to mount the light yet. I looked in the Radion thread for some ideas as there are quite a few people with some DIY hanging options. I dont know how the wife will feel about hanging the light from the ceiling so will talk to her about it if that will even be an option. My idea about using some design like the stock lights didnt last long when I read that the unit weighs 3lbs.

Ideas as of right now are brackets mounted to the wall and the wire kit, from a shelf with wire kit, or from the ceiling. I dont think I want to have any rails coming up from behind the tank although I may find something. Who knows lol. Once the lights get here I'll be impatient for sure!

Nice looking tank! I was considering a Nuvo 16 too, but was scared off by the quality control issues I was reading about. Also knew I wasn't going to stick with the lights, so I got a 16gal bowfront by Aqueon instead.

Looking forward to seeing your new light.

Thanks! I still dont know how I'm going to hang the light and it should be here any time lol. Will get some measurements and head to Lowes most likely.

I got the Radion hooked up and running correctly as far as I can tell. Software seemed easy enough. I have it aprox 12 inches above the tank with the ecotech mounting kit. Hope the pump is as easy to set up.

Will the pump and light connect to one another or will that have to wait for the Q3 update?

Storm mode looks kinda cool but I coudnt figure out a way to just have it come on every so many hours. I would have to have it set to come on each day at a certain time from what I could tell. If they could update that it would be worth using since I dont care to see it stobe every day but once or twice a week would be ok.

I have it ramping up to 35% max for 3 hours right now and plan on ramping it every other day by 2% until I reach around 50-60% and then go from there.

So far so good!

Thanks! Really thinking about getting a couple more, their largest and a pico.

I bought it before reading any reviews and looked good to me out of the box. I'm sure they fixed the QC issues after refunding how ever many tanks. I''m sure it wasnt hard to correct the issue (someone got fired would be my guess).

Never had a bowfront but have seen some nice ones.

Good luck with yours!

Well, I got the mp10 unboxed it and started trying to get a little wave going and then I noticed the W wasnt lit up!!!!

Went back and looked at the box, sure enough, they sent me an mp10 and not the mp10w that I ordered.

That will be the last time I order from Bulk Reef Supply. He said Oh I'm sorry I'll ship you the sorrect pump after I get yours back. I just said no refund my money and I'll get one from somewhere else if you cant ship the pump. So, I ordered one from the Drs and had it overnighted. Will be here Fri. Atleast I have the ATO. I only ordered from Bulk because the doctors didnt have the tunze ATO.

I have had a huge addition project that has been going on for about a year now. It has a full bar, fish tank room with inwall tank, True home theater that was designed by one of the best home theater designers in the US. I've been having extremely bad luck with equipment in the past couple of months so have really been on edge then this happened while I have SPS in shopping carts just waiting on the pump.

I'll just say this, I have had so many problems with equipment and quality control from very high end theater components that I've started wondering if this house is cursed. Just last night my hdmi input on a brand new reciever quit working, then first thing today I get the wrong pump. Fun!

I'll get some pics! Its at the full 35% 14k setting right now.
