Another question about drains

I am looking for that down pipe that I see in a lot of commercial aquariums that is all holes. I would like to try that on mine and wrap polyester fiber around it for a pre-filter to the sump. I looked around Lowes today and couldn't find anything like it. I could just drill a bunch of holes in a PVC pipe but it wouldn't be as good as the screen type pipe I've seen.

Any one know what I am talking about :)
Thanks

I know exactly what your talking about. I have a few of these that came with some used tanks I bought. They look like screens but in cylinder form. you could probably make some out of plastic cross stitch canvas(which are actually screens) found at walmart art n' crafts section. These screens make good overflow protection, instead of teeth, also. The stuff your looking for looks like this

Thanks dsalillas, they are more then I thought, not much though. I will however take your advice and try out that cross stitch idea first, if it doesn't work then not much money wasted. :)

Marine Depot Sells THESE They are threaded so they screw right into your bulkheads. They also sell some that are slip fitted.. Not sure if thats what you had in mind..

Be VERY careful filtering your drain. Definitely don't use filter floss or foam! Plastic canvas (what dsalillas is talking about that you can buy from a crafts store) is very versatile for aquarium use, but always leave space above the filter for the water to pour over top into the drain if for some reason your filter material gets clogged up.

Thanks for all the info, I just hope it wont be to loud, if so, then I will have to put it al under water again. Just thought I would try something different this time around.

Are you doing an overflow drain? Like the one in this photo all the way to the right?

Cheap but effective. If you want quiet, build the drain large enough to have a standpipe inside the drain. Although filling the pipe with bioballs did very nicely at quieting that drain down, it was the water falling into the sump that was the noise problem. Alternately, you can put a valve on the end of the drain and dial it back so that the water level raises in the drain pipe -- but this is very risky and I sure wouldn't do it.
