Hi
What are residual nitrates and phosphates?
Also my tank is only 2 months old but has stable calcium and alklinity as well as ph. I feed regularly so i suspect nitrates are ok....for a clam...Would i be able to have one of these creatures?

thanks,

No, a tank that young is not ready for a clam. Any clam needs a very mature tank, around one year old or so. Do you have metal halide lighting? What are your lights and tank size?

Never suspect anything is OK without testing. :) When your tank is about a year, after you've regularly checked your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, CA, SG, temp, PH, etc is all fine and stable, and your lighting is sufficient then a tank is ready for a clam.

What fish and inverts are in your tank? Many can prey on clams.

If you're really interested in a clam, read Giant Clams by Daniel Knop. Then you will know for sure whether your tank can support a clam.

hi
I have a 55 gallon tank with a kole tang and a blue devil. Eeverybody thinks that having a tang in a 55 is not a good thing but i sort of disagree. This is off subject but i would like to know your opinion on this matter also!!!! I have 4,65 watt PC's placed about 6-7 inches from the surface of the water. I have one cleaner shrimp and one peppermint shrimp and also many snails. Coral wise, I have one laether, one frag of xenia, and assortments of mushrooms. Thats about it .

Thanks,

Your tank does not have sufficient light for maxima or crocea clams. If you had 2 250 watt MH lights it would be good.

In my opinion, there is also not enough light for a squamosa or derasa clam. Since those clams do not often like to be placed up on the rockwork, and like to be on the sand, they would not receive enough light being so far away from your PCs.

If you upgrade your lighting and your tank matures, I reccomend reading Knop's Giant Clams book to see if you think you can safely keep one.

(Also, peppermint shrimp and clams can be a bad combination....they sometimes find clams tasty)
