Another 'what fish should i get?' thread

I've posted a few of these in the past so I'm not slamming anyone. Anyways, as the repetitive thread title hints, i need ideas for fish for my 75. I have an 8 bulb light fixture (only using 4 to save on $$), 75g tank, 30g sump, SWC 160, mag 9.5 return, and i need to buy new powerheads, probably tunzes. Ive thought of a scorps and lion tank but Im not sure if im dedicated to possibly feeding certain fish live shrimp forever. Ive pondered a filefish tank, but Im not sure what filefish i could put in a 75. Ive thought of an eel tank, probably 2 fimbys. Lets not forget the regular, clownfish, tang, wrasse, chromis combo.

So any ideas on a really cool or unique tank? Im really interested in a lion tank but idk if i can feed them lives forever. Anyone have any idea?

If the fish allow it, i might throw in some corals to add coral.

Thanks for the help, im planning on nailing the aquascape before i fill the tank so the sooner i decide of some the sooner the tank gets up.

I recently got some lionfish for my tank because im restocking it. I got a gold fuzzy dwarf and a mombasa lion off of divers den. A day after they arrived i fed them ghost shrimp and they got full on those. One day later i tried silversides for my mombasa because he is large enough to eat it and he took a little bit of coaxing but he gobbled it down. A day later my fuzzy started eating vitamin soaked krill.

Anyway, except from the initial feeding to get them to just eat in my tank, i havent had to feed live anymore.

Not sure if you mean a filefish only tank or not, but I'd probably pick something more interesting/exciting to watch. Most of the commonly available files (other than OSF) don't have much of a wow factor to them.

An eel tank would certainly be awesome. You could also do a 'reef' style tank with macro algae, a few low light corals (zoas, mushrooms, etc.) and do clowns, wrasse, etc. like you mentioned. Hard to make a lot of suggestions if you don't have any idea which direction you'd like to go. With a 75g you have a lot of options.

Adam- Ya ive been reading your threads, maybe i should just take the bait and have the LFS order me some lions.

Stumped- I was thinking of a filefish only tank, 3 or 4 diff types of filefish, something different i guess. Sorry if its hard to think of suggestions, Im just nervous about spending $70 on a fish (or more) and have it either eaten by another fish, or die for an unknown reason, ive lost probably $700 or more in fish that way.

I guess a 'refined search' would be disease resistant fish, a few fish in the 75, hardy, and easy to feed (not feeding every 1 hour, not feeding live forever). Does that help a lil? Sorry i struggle with making decisions lol.

Palmer,

To be honest, out of all the lions we, and I, have ever kept, I've only had one specimen in over 20 years that didn't take to the stick. It was an older volitans, and to be honest, way back then, nobody seemed to know many tricks about feeding them, or how to do it, so it was probably my fault as much as the fish being stubborn.

IIRC, DD just had a nice-looking Mombasa for sale as of yesterday. That's a nice fish for a 75 gal.

Personally id just order from dd instead of your lfs because i know mine wasnt able to attain any lion other than a volitain and they are never gonna be as healthy as the ones from dd. Im very happy with what i recieved from dd. Also cant beat that 14 day guarantee.

Trio of fuzzy dwarf lionfish. hands down. place some interesting macro in there and have a neat little tank. :)

We've gotten some nice lions from DD, esp. lately. Our new pair of fuzzies, radiata and antennata are all doing really well. In fact, we need to move the radiata out of its QT/weaning tank cuz it's growing so nicely.

Ash,

A M-F-F trio of fuzzies would be awesome. I just LOVE juvie fuzzies...our two newest specimens are a crack up, esp. when they spit water at me cuz I'm slow with the "stick".

Just read article on Reefs(dot)com...about the fact that tunze pumps, have actual GPH output about 50% lower than advertised.

Im reading the article right now, thansk for the tip. I said Tunzes because i hear hardly any stories of their pumps breaking.

Hmm thanks namxas, adam, and ashtree. I guess i'll look into lions, I dont see why some corals wouldnt do ok with them. Id love to order from DD but its $65 shipping unless i order over $225. Id rather just special order from my LFS, watch it for a few weeks and buy it.

So what would be a good stocking list for a 75 with lions and scorps?
Im thinking of:
a pair of fuzzy dwarf lions, maybe a trio
a pair of bristletail filefish if i can find a pair

These are the fish i want for sure, Ill look through Frank's lionfish book for others. Fill in the stock list gaps if you want.

Thanks for the help everyone.

File fish are great and quite under rated I think as they aren't that colourful if you are looking at the matted ones etc but they make up for it in being cool :artist: I have three and had to split them when two formed a pair due to a lot of tail nipping etc for me they are the 'alternative' trigger. The pair are still doing great and are all over the tank although they are quite shy in the beginning. One eats pellets and everything else, the other two meaty foods and whatever they want on the rocks. They don't touch the turbos or hermits and don't bother any of the other fish.
