Anthias - Carberryi vs Evansi

Hi All,

Wondering if you fish experts out there can help me figure out what I bought. Went to LFS yesterday and was told that I was sold Evansi's but could also be a Carberryi since they came in the same shipment. Bought a group of 6 were all eating yesterday which leads me to believe they were actually Carberryi.

Checked out Quality Marine's website and they both look similar, not exactly sure where I should be looking at for differences. I see the upper lip is slightly upturned on the Carberry and the eyestripe is thicker. Anything else?

Hi I was there at AV when they came in and was tempted myself to get them, but I have males of Bartlet and Hutchi that would hurt them. The Evansi were the larger ones with the solid yellow backs and tails. GL with them.

Carberryo develop longer dorsal filaments on the first and second dorsal spines.

Ok, So I'm pretty sure Evansi then, no protruding dorsal spine.

There is a fairly large difference in their coloring too. Carberryi are not as intense with the colors, and evansi are more purple/yellow. Carberryi are more pink and yellow like bartletts but not as bright. Evansi also get larger, albeit long

Evansi is much tougher to get to feed and need more feelings daily then carberryi

Actually carberryi can vary drastically in their coloring as they mimic other anthias to school with them. Sometimes mimicing evansi, sometimes ignitus.

Noticed last night they have a tiny yellow highlight on their upper lip, don't know if that makes a difference?

Taking a second look and an online search, I'm pretty sure they are carberryi's. All the pictures I've seen that have the yellow upper lips seem to indicate that its a carberryi.

On the other hand seeing that the other name for Carberryi is Threadfin? Do the dorsal spikes develop with age or are they always there? My fish don't currently have them.

TJ, I'm sure they do, but I've never seen a carberryi even remotely close in brightness to an evansi.

Skiwez, I know that QM is one of the distributors they order from and never seen them come in as brightly colored as their website photos. They look more like the pics on LA's website. You can give Andy a PM and he could tell you where they came from.

Agreed. Pics are almost always different in color than actuality
