Anthias for 125g

So I have a 125 6 foot tank that I setup about 2 months ago. So far I have a pair of clowns, 6 line wrasse, royal gramma, powder blue tang, yellow tang (not in the tank yet, but he will be soon), 2 cleaner shrimp and a peppermint shrimp. I am looking into getting a small group of fish but I am really trying to keep this tank a good community. I like a lot of chromis, but I keep hearing they'll kill each other eventually, and Im not willing to deal with that. I guess the next option would be a small group of anthias.

I was looking into bartlets and fathead or sunburst (whatever you want to call them). I know they both need to be fed at least twice a day which I don't think would be a problem. I am just wondering about stock issues. Do I have enough room for them to be happy? I would like to get a few more fish too eventually, so I want to keep that in mind. Im thinking about some kind of goby, a blenny, and a mandarin down the road. So I think the best thing for me to get next would be a small school. What do you guys think? Do I have enough room for more fish after this small list?

I'd watch it with the PBT. He'll probably be a little cramped in that tank, and become aggressive.

Anthias are cool fish. You could look into a trio, or possibly even 4 in your tank. After that, watch for space, and water parameters before adding more. If you do add more, try to keep them small...

Best of luck!!!

errrrrr really? I picked the two tangs thinking they'd have enough room. He seems really happy right now (about 4-5 inches). I would like to keep the bioload on the lower side, that's why I was thinking only 3 anthias.

I have a trio or Bartletts in my 125G. I would avoid them, they are fairly aggresive to my wrasses.

I was thinking of getting bartletts because I herd they are the easiest of the anthias to keep. I also thought they were the friendliest, but I guess you cant go by what you hear a lot of the time. A lot of people say 6 line wrasses are aggressive, but mine loves every new comer in the tank. He swims with the clowns and the royal gramma all day. They are like a little school, its funny.

I've seen several people keep PBTs in tanks your size, and things are normally fine at first, but as they get older things start to change.

Six lines are normally fine in just about any size tank, but at about the 6-12 month period, they turn into buttholes. Very territorial...

I had 3 lyertail anthias that were peaceful to anything except other anthias or fish their same shape, and gobies for some reason.

Not saying that it won't work for you, because each fish has their own personality, but things do tend to change when they remain trapped in the same tank over time. I love my girlfriend to death, but if we were trapped in the same room 24/7, I'm sure we'd fight allot more than we do now. LOL...

How long has your tank been up and running with your current livestock?

Well, I had most of the current fish in a 29g biocube for a year (2 clowns, 6 line, royal gramma). I fired up the 125 about 2months ago and threw all the LR from the biocube in with about another 110lbs of base rock. I waited until this week to put the PBT in (I had the PB and the YT in quarantine for about 5 weeks). I put the PB in and he looks awesome in there. The yellow tang looked a little crappy still, so I kept him in a little longer.

Im just trying to figure out what I'm getting next because it's going to be 3-5 weeks before they hit the tank. I'm thinking the tank needs a little school, so that's what I'm looking into.

I did add a few pieces of coral since I started the tank, but I only want to buy big pieces, so it takes time to find them.

Thanks for the article, ill read it when I get out of work. I did look into the different cardinals, but I just couldn't get into them. They definitely seem easier to care for though.

Easier to care for, but aren't good shippers sometime. Mabye you could get a LFS to order them for you, and you can observe how they do in the store after being shipped before you buy them....

Which the cardinals or anthias. I don't like the cardinals so much and I'm willing to do some more work for the anthias. I'm leaning towards the sunburst, but idk where ill be able to find them.

The Carberryi anthias and the ignitus are pretty peaceful fish and can be kept in groups. I prefer either of them to Bartlets or lyretails.

So after looking for what seems like forever, I found 2 groups of anthias. The first trio I saw were sunbursts and they looked really nice, but they had two problems. First I think they were all males, and secondly the store wanted 85 BUCKS A PIECE!!!! Which wouldn't be out of the question if I didn't think they were all males.

The second set I found were bartletts. They were about 1.25 inches and all female. I wanted them a little bigger but the guy said he'd give me all three for 75 so I took em. They seemed really healthy, I saw them eat and they are happily in my QT where they will be for the next few weeks.

I can't believe how hard to find these things were...
