Anthias in a 150

Hey guys,

I'm considering adding 3 to 4 anthias to my 150 gallon 5 ft tank.

I have 6 fish currently, and my tank has been running for almost 2 years now.

Would the anthias be fine in this setup? I plan to increase feeding (because hey, I'm home all day due to covid) to a few times a day due to their eating habits.

Are there any good QT suggestions for these guys? Would they be fine with TTM in 5 gallon buckets only being fed once or twice a day? Or would it better to just straight QT in a 20 gallon for a 8 weeks or more?

Can you list your other fish? I prefer Bimacs in larger tanks, but they are sometimes aggressive towards other fish.

Dispar, Bartlett's, Lyretails or Squarebacks would all work well in a 5 foot tank as well. Just don't get any of those really small deepwater anthias, as you'll never see them.

I have a trio of Lyretails in my 120. I got them as small juveniles (females) and as they grew one changed to very nice male. I feed them no differently than my other fish. Pellets most days, frozen something maybe once or twice a week. Single feeding each day, usually in the evening.

In sigy, but I have foxface lo, 2 spot bristletooth tang, 2 clowns (true, snowflake), purple firefish, royal gramma.

I think my local LFS has a dozen female lyretails, and I do like their looks.

Would it be easy to TTM 3 lyretails? (As easy as any other fish really?)

They are easier than most other anthias, but I would feed them 3-4x daily. Small, frequent feedings of mysis, calanus, LRS, etc. Try to get all females, or 1 male + 2 females. Watch closely for aggression, as sometimes the male pesters the females too much in a small QT.

Right, I'm going to get 3 females. I think that's all he has is females. They're eating frozen and pellets apparently too. He's had them at least for over a couple weeks now at the store.

I'm also going to go for 2 day changes on the TTM, as with 3 in a 5 gallon, I'm just nervous about ammonia build up. Or is that possibly too much stress?

I could limit it to just 2 days on 2 of the rotations when I dose Prazi (usually do the 2nd and 4th rotations), as I don't think I can dose Prime and Prazi at the same time.

On a side note: He has also has an orangeback fairy wrasse, would there be any issue with the royal gramma or a purple tang (may be my last fish down the road added) due to it's purple coloration?

You can follow this TTM schedule for Ich & velvet: https://humble.fish/ttm-for-velvet/

Following that should also alleviate any ammonia buildup. But I would watch closely for aggression between them; 3 female Bimacs in just a 5 gallon bucket might not work out.

Orangebacks are typically only aggressive towards other fairy wrasses.

That's awesome. Thanks for the schedule recommendations. I am going to pick up a couple extra buckets, and I think I've got 4 extra small heaters around. So I may go with 2, 5 gallons at a time, and keep 1 fish separate....or heck maybe I'll get 4 anthias to keep it even :)

When would you dose prazi, before 3rd and 6th transfers?

Not to thread jack, but could you go with hybrid TTM method as well? You are treating for more possibly, while doing same TTM schedule as you listed above. Seeing how Hybrid TTM was your idea in the 1st place, figured I'll go to the source of info :)

Thanks

had 4 lyretails in my 155, now down to 1 in my 120 several years later. had a male and 3 females. two of the females did well, the other was kind of ostracized.

i ran them through TTM with prazi, no problem. small feedings a couple times a day in QT are appreciated. now that mine are established, they get fed once or twice a day in the tank and are just fine.

Yes, just needs to be about a week apart.

Yes, but ATM 36 hour transfers are more proven than Hybrid TTM for eliminating velvet. That being said, Hybrid TTM has worked now 5 times on fish infected with velvet. I just like to see 15-20 successes (with no failures) before I consider something "proven" to my satisfaction.

I think my game plan is going to be to start with 5 gallon buckets and start the velvet version, since the 36 hrs is pretty short for the first few transfers (assuming 3 fish). For the last 2 transfers I'll pick up a couple of 10 gallon buckets.

Alright, I picked up 3 this afternoon. And they are all eating pellets already and happily swimming around the bucket.

So that should help with keeping food under control. I'll mix in some mysis too.

They all look healthy. The LFS had had them for 3 weeks, and they went through at least some treatment, Foran, prazi, and copper.

But I still plan on the TTM w/ a couple weeks in my own QT before hitting the DT.
