Anthias

Why do these seemingly small fish need such large minimum tank sizes?

Is it because they are usually kept in groups so this tank size is recommended for a group?

Because they make an enormous amount of waste?

Because they need a large amount of swimming room?

Or what!

I've asked this numerous times before and really want to know!

Thanks :)

I think it says that most can be kept alone in a 55gal but they prefer to be in groups, my bartletts hang out with my Dispars. So I think it would be better to keep them with a group of females with one male, they also say they prefer vertical rock faces which mimics where most of them come from.

Have you ever seen them swim. They are magnificent swimmers and when you watch them dart around you will see why they shouldnt be in small quarters. They dont like to be crowded by other livestock in small tanks particularly if it isnt other anthias'.
The fact that they need frequent nutrient rich feedings does contribute to secondary problems associated with smaller water volumes. I wouldnt put 4 or 5 anthias in anything smaller than a 120. At 120 a harem should likely be the only livestock fish wise you should keep except for another solitary, peaceful species like a mandarin or jawfish, lawnmower blenny or something like that.
