anti mildew silicone

I think I made a mistake. I used anti mildew silicone in my sump and have read it's bad. Does anyone have experience with ill effects of using this silicone? Should I remove all the silicone and start over?

Make sure you let it cure a good week or longer, maybe two weeks. It should not be a problem...what kills fish is uncured silicone, not some mysterious component of the silicone.

I put the baffle walls in 2 or 3 weeks ago and it's been dry. I was just about to put it in use when I discovered the problems with GE silicone II. Can I be confident I wont have issues with my reef tank?
90 gal with 35 gal sump with the baffle walls.

It is neutral cure silicone, they are more toxic than acetoxy cure silicones, in their uncured form. 3 weeks should be plenty of time for it to cure...

the anti mildew part is marketing hype, I've never found any extra compounds in the MSDS sheets. just the fact that silicone is inert and not a good substrate for mildew to grow on is what they market. just make sure it is fully cured as already mentioned. I used it in my sump and it's been running for years now no issues.

The fungicide question is a big source of confusion. The marketing materials frequently as much as say that there are fungicides added, but they're never listed in the MSDS. I did see post from someone who claimed to have talked to a (GE?) rep who said there were in fact fungicides added that weren't on the MSDS. That's 4th or 5th hand information at this point, and I have never verified it, so take it for what it's worth. (probably not much! :p)

The bottom line is that people have used it (properly cured) without issue tells me that if there are in fact fungicides added, that the issue is the curing and not the fungicide.

My personal approach is to use RTV if I have the time to get it. If I need something quick that I can get at HD or Lowes, I use GE Silicone I.

FWIW, the law is pretty clear on what must be in the MSDS. If a manufacturer wants to be cute and sneaky, they put the "bad stuff" in a section that is called "proprietary ingredients." A little chemistry sniffing around will reveal that there is nothing in GE Silicone II, that is inconsistant with all neutral cure silicones. Plus, there is nothing listed under the sneaky section...and such an ingredient such as a fungacide, mildewcide, is going to be pretty nasty, so you can bet it is required to be listed along with the LD50 and other pertinent information such as carcinogenic, with an LD50 of zip, along with BPA, and other nonsense...silicone is naturally mildew resistant, (the midlew grows under it,) so it is resistant to mildew... neutral cure silicone is naturally more mildew resistant that acetoxy cure hence "BIO_SEAL" BUY ME! BUY ME! Without proper ventilation, the mildew grows like mad anyway...

If we are to take a closer look at this, neutral cure silicone does not stick to glass as well as acetoxy cure silicone; neutral cure silicone sticks better to metal than acetoxy cure silicone, and is not as corrosive as acetoxy cure (hence "neutral cure"--not acidic...if we are to look for a reason to use or not to use something, make it a real reason...like all the silicones, sold at big box stores, are garbage, you can get better, and you deserve it... (you is generic you)
