Ive seen that there has been allot of posts about Japanese Dendros lately..Well Ive had a single headed dendro for about 5 to 6 months now and he looks great every day, stays open allot, but never once has it showed signs of spawning..I heard they usually spawn quick and almost everyones posts show babies on the sides..What is everyones technique for spawning??
..........It is in my 240g reef tank in partial shade, with alternating current, I'm running a calcium reactor and keep my levels balance out properly..I diectly feed him "New Life Spectrum" pellets every third day(my local LFS recommended it) and it gets a little mysis once a week or so...anything im doing wrong?..or could add?..thanks alot

wingman,

Are you sure the coral you have is not Balanophyllia instead? Got any pictures?

I have to agree with GreshamH... I thought/read Japanese Dendros are illegal as well. Unless something has recently changed in their export???

How did you obtain the coral?

Nothing has changed, very unlikely they're Japanese "dendros", although quite possible they were marketed as such.

The quick "spawning" event can be caused by stress and is a last ditch effort by the coral to reproduce. They can spwan under great conditions over time, but this is not what the people are experiencing that you're referring to.

Agreed, I think the original poster was looking for advice on spawning, not advice on ethics.
Anyway, proper flow, food, stability and patience will prevail in the end. I know this is a broad statement, but there isn't much you can do other then that to spread corals that you cant propagate.
Edit: I forgot to add, I have a single dendro polyp that wont grow babies as well. It's been months...

Thanks "Jeff"...everyone was doubting me and not giving any advice..lol..lets just say I'm an ex-Marine and i know people in Okinawa..yes its Japanese..i probably shouldn't have said anything..Ill keep my hopes up though Jeff and your lucky "PhamtonBlue"..ill switch my feeding to every other day for a while..Thanks again everyone!!

A friend of mine fed his almost every day, the polyps are insanely huge and dense with smaller heads. I have a frag from his colony that I've had for a year now, I feed mine less and it is no where near the size as his.

are you guys sure that japanese dendros are illegal to sell. I have seen one for sale. The seller explained to me how difficult it is to get due to cities. He had it for over a year. So it cant be illegal to sell it to me if its already here, right? It probably wont be easy to get them in the future.

I think whats illegal is the importing of them..some weird Japanese trade agreement ...but if someone already had them in the country for a while and they spawn, then the babies can be traded...but i don't know for sure because their is no official laws posted anywhere in the states for them that i know of

Just because there are laws against bringing them in doesn't mean people don't bring them in, it's just illegal. It's illegal to sell drugs but people do it anyways.

lol...exactly Nemo..I don't think the feds are very worried about coral coming in from Japan, when they have terrorists, criminals and real smuggling to stop.. hahaha
