i am looking for two emerald crabs to combat some bubble algae that popped up recently. anyone know where i can get a couple? preferably in the city or south thereof

Watch these crabs w/ smaller fish. IME and my reading, these crabs are not safe around smaller fish and do not always have a taste for bubble algae.

i will be headed to the plainfield area tomm so i may be able to swing over to naperville. thanks masson, i ll check on it

hans...i have heard that they may not like the valonia but id like to give them a shot. ive got some smaller clowns 1.5". hopefully they will be safe. my small damsel i can fend for itself.

if anyone else knows of any places please let me know.

if its the one on sr 59 then i already called and they said they have a cpl around dime to nickel size. now i just have to get the wife to take a slight detour. thanks for the info

dont' get them. Mine ate a cleaner shrimp and a six line wrasse.

If you do get one, aquatic island in Arlington Heights and Downtown pets in chicago (southloop) has them.

I am not surprised that there's just as many people w/ good experiences as the bad ones regarding these green guys. They are kind of hit or miss, just gotta buy one and see what happens :D . I have had good ones and bad ones. But there is just this common misconception that they are totally and completely safe and I have found this out (the hard way) to be inaccurate.

As with any crab, they are oportunistic feeders. They will eat what they can, when they can.

if youre having issues with certain algaes that you need help with, then I am not against crabs, but to simply add them just as a novilty is not a good decission.
If bubble algae is getting out of control, by all means, get an emerald. If you have a bubble or 2, try manual removal (pop & siphon).
Same with hermits.. If youre having turf algae isssues, a few hermits will help. If its just a small patch on a small rock. Then Id look at a tooth brush and a spare buchet of salt water.

(FWIW, I have never had any issues with emeralds catching fish.)

not a bad place at all really, if you are well informed. Just dont count on them for any real info on anything.

downtown pets is off Michigan an 16th (just south of roosevelt)

The couple that ownes it is awesome!
