We have one for the fall frag swap members only raffle, curious if anyone uses one and what their thoughts are.

Tagging along on this one as I've been debating on getting one for the 120 and how would it work on a possible 280 upgrade

I am using the smaller Gyre on my 36 gallon bowfront. I love it. It's the only powerhead I'm using and there are no dead spots. It pushes out a sheet of water that circulates throughout the entire tank.

130 in a 60g cube. Can't run it over 50%, or my sand bed won't stay put. Great flow.

Only downside that I know of is cleaning them. They're a bit of a pain to disassemble and clean. Aside from that minor issue, great piece of equipment.

Agree with the cleaning as a downside. A bit of a pain. And when they start to get buildup in/on them, it seems the flow drops off rather quickly.
Another negative , at least when I got mine, was the minimal control it offers out of the box. Pretty basic, and without the ability to change the flow pattern at different times of the day. I'm not sure if they have upgraded the controls or not, I think I read something where they were. and not sure if the upgrade comes w the unit or if it's an aftermarket like the icecap.
Once I chucked out the money for the icecap module to hook it up to the Apex, the possibilities of programming it are pretty much endless. I have it slowly ramp up in intensity for the first fee hiurs, then pulse thru the day, with the pulses increasing in intensity till around 4. Then it reverses the cycle (waning pulses, waning flow intensity) .
You may want to wait on getting one though, I think I read they are coming out with an even larger model. (Nook-sized).

I have 3. Only had to clean one so far and it's been almost a year. I run most of mine vertical. Very happy with this style of pump.

I've always thought that two of these, mounted vertical, in opposing corners, and switching flow direction every six hours would be awesome. Add another horizontally at one end pulsing every six seconds or so....

150 in my 8' 240.
Not a spot of water not moving, I keep it at constant full blast and am horrible with cleaning it.
Love it.
