Trachyphyllia with a gaping mouth. Probably not a good thing. Unless it just ate a snail, or something big and hard that is keeping the mouth "propped" open. Hard to tell from the pics, but is there a lump under the greenish skin near the mouth? Kinda looks like there might be in the actinic light picture. If so, I'd say a snail fell onto it, and it ate it. If that's the case, it'll eventually spit it out.

Kind of like this:

I hadnt thought of that but it is possible. When I look through the mouth all I can see is the skeleton. Is there anything I could do to help it out?

So its been like this for about two months and today it actually is starting to inflate to the size it used to be and the hole is actually a separate hole from the mouth. The actual mouth is starting to form again and re grow and the hole looks like its healing up. I might be imagining it but I think feeding helped but its hard to say with any certainty.

Guess I didnt think to say that before. Its finally showing some recovery though, still wish I knew how it happened in the first place.

i'd say if that wasn't the mouth either something attacked it, or something sharp either hit it or something heavy was laying on it. Would have to be something that would break the skin, thats the only thing i can see doing that.

It was in a chamber if my fuge that only has fine sand in it and some little snails. I checked on it one day and it just had this hole all of a sudden.

Just an update, still have no idea what happened but its almost completely healed and looking much better than it was. Tried to feed it last night but its not quite there yet.

One last update. The coral is fully healed and accepting food. Feeder tentacles are finally fully extending at night and it couldnt look healthier.

Nice one, have the same issue but the tissue seems unable to regenerate over the skeleton. Been like this for months.

Fairly certain what originally caused it was the fuge light it was under. It had that hole for a few months before it finally started to show any healing.
