Any recomendations on HLLE ?

I took away my carbon reactor about 2 1/2 months ago. Have been feeding fish paste with Amino & Omega, Zoe and Selcom since. 2 or 3 times a week.
Plus dry foods like ON 1 & 2 and all sort of other brands, this is 2 times a day with the electronic feeder.

But not a sign of recuperation.

How long does it take to go away ? Should i expect any signs of improvement any time soon ?

I have a total of 5 tangs, but the worst case is in the Blue Tang

I had a similar issue about a month ago. In my case it was caused by stray electrical current. I have been feeding the fish heavily and it's mostly cleared up. I feed PE mysis, Ocean Nutrition flake, nori, San Fransisco bay brine, live blackworms and spectrum thera a+ pellets.

System background:

220G reef (sps mainly) Total system of 300G
Next reef N/P Biopellet reactor
Deltec 2560 TC Skimmer
Calcium reactor
Lifeguard 40W UV filter (just changed the bulb last weekend)

All parameters are very solid, never had ups and downs to worry, same with temperature
The system has been running for 10 months

The fishes are not rubbing against any rocks
All of them very very agressive when it comes to eat, and swim all around the system, non stop

My hepatus looks just like this one (took this pic from the net)

These pics are from my other tangs

How did you solved the stray electrical current ??

This is what my tang looks like. I have same problem, and been trying the same treatments. She has gotten better but I have a nice tank otherwise and disappointed that she looks so bad. She seems healthy otherwise, behavior, eating, and gets long well with the other fish. Selcon was recommend to me by many people and LFS. I soak almost every feeding in it.

How did you solved the stray electrical current ??

Use one of the titanium grounding probes. Before you do, use a voltmeter and test for current between the tank water and a known good ground. Clamp the meter's leads in place, then disconnect each device until you see a drop in the current on the meter.

Of course, remove and replace the offending item and connect the grounding device. Best to use a titanium rod and a plug that uses the house's grounding system (assuming that the house has good grounding)

:D Hope that help... Keep us updated...

I have seen one case moderately helped by diet supplement: Zoe or Selcon soak for the nori.
Watch your alkalinity: it's not a cause, but it could make the fish uncomfortable if off.
Be sure the fish gets plenty of greens: they love shrimp like candy, but it's not what they ought to be eating primarily.
And some people have suggested (unproven) that constant use of activated carbon may somehow be a trigger for it, but again, unproven.

Thanks guys for all the tips. An electrician will be coming tomorrow and test every single outlet. If there´s a problem with it, he should find it.

About the feeding ... i have been doing everything there is on the net when it comes to HLLE. As stated on the first post, i have taken out the carbon reactor just in case.

Will see tomorrow ...

Keep you posted.

Thanks guys for all the tips. An electrician will be coming tomorrow and test every single outlet. If there´s a problem with it, he should find it.

FYI, it's not the "outlet" that's leaking current. it's one of the electrical device inside the tank, e.g., heaters, pumps, powerheads, etc. the outlet supplies current from the utility company and the devices inside the tank use that current and leak it if any is defective.

The easiest way to find out is have someone with electrical engineering knowledge perform what the previous post described. measure the current with a meter between the tank water and a good ground. if there's significant current, unplug one device at a time until the current drops, and that device is the culprit.

It takes years for a fish to fully recover from a bad case of HLLE. Keep the water chemistry in good shape, and feed a varied diet heavy in seaweed, it'll recover eventually.

The easiest way to do the test is with a multimeter. Place the negative probe into the ground outlet of any wall socket. Then place the positive lead into the water and read the current. Electrical current was the cause of my case of HLLE but may not be the reason for yours. Worth looking into regardless.
