Any small but good skimmers

I have a 75 with almost no bio load, although it's just getting put together. Total water volume including sump is 100 gallons. I don't have a skimmer yet, and I don't want one that won't be able to handle everything. Problem is that the area under the tank is only 18 inches high, which would mean that I can only fit something 15 inches in there to allow for collection cup removal clearance. Are there any small ones that would would in my sumo, and not be really crappy? I'm on a $300 budget.

15 inches isnt much space. Would you be able to put an 18 inch skimmer in there by taking the cup off and then sliding it on whens is down there?

Since your just putting it together, I'd recommend trying to gain some more room under there, if possible.

Can you lower the base shelf?

If you could get 22-26 inches, there are some good skimmers for $300. & under.

You could mod it with a long hose from the pump in the sump to the skimmer. Maybe you have more overhead space somewhere in the vicinity?

With that space now available, I do not think you get anything better for the money than an msx 160. Under $300.00 and would do a great job on a 75. I am running one on a 125 with the large purple atb pinwheel. I am very impressed with the skimmer. It is a pretty compact unit which does a real good job and will allow you to upgrade to a larger tank later should you choose to. You can check out the comments here and elsewhere, and I think you will find a general view that the msx/octopus extreme skimmers are the best bang for your buck on the market and do a very good job.

I second the vote for the Octopus NW150. I have one on my 120 and I have been throughly impressed with how much skim it pulls out for the money. Don't have any experience with the others however. Just my .02

You should be ok running an extreme in 7 inches of water, but I would simply raise your sump level 1 inch. That should be no big deal to do. Just add some water and add a bit more salt. I would go with an msx 160 over an octopus extreme 160 because although they are basicaly the same skimmer, the msx has two advantages. Its included pinwheel is better than the octopus and the sicce pump is machined unlike the octopus so as to give you a bit better performance. Plus, the msx has a much smaller footprint than the octopus extreme which in your situation is of great benefit. These skimmers will give you substantially better performance that the nw series from octopus because they have wider plumbing and a much better pump. I owned the new 2009 NW 150 for about 1 week, and I sold it because although it worked well, it just did not have enough capacity for my system and bought the msx 160. Moroever, you further can improve the performance of the msx and octopus extreme skimmers by buying an additional large ATB purple pinwheel ($30 usd). I just added the ATB pinwheel to my msx 160, and it really does greatly further improve performance.
