I've posted before with lack-luster results.... Does anyone have a good idea how to get rid of hydroid colonies? I mean for good! these little buggers are relentless.

 No thanks! Well, I've tried some variations on the kalk paste, but they keep coming back. Seemed to work well when I stunned them with kalk, then took a razorblade to them. I'm guessing manual removal is best?

I wish I had better news for you. I've been battling them for several years now. They pretty much have ruined my entire tank. I have used/tried the following:

1) Manual removal - requires that the rock be removed from the tank before attempting, or you risk spreading them.

2) Good skimming helps. But IME, it only slows the spreading, and doesn't make them go away.

3) Kalk- trying to use on these things in large numbers is a joke.

4) Hammer and chisel - Chisel off those infected areas of rock.

5) Cooking your rocks - Actually can be really effective. I was able to get rid of alot of it this way. But, some did find its way back to my tank.

6) Fresh water soak - Effective but kills your rock.

I've just about reached the point of giving up. Its WAY to much work to do on my 250g. I'm planning a complete tear down and redo, after I soak all my rocks in fresh water for like a week.

I epoxied over a few patches only to have them pop up on the sides a few weeks later. Might work with some vigilance and/or a combo of attacks.

Where I've expoxied those *****es on my rocks, I now have coralline.

 What brand epoxy was it? Did you just glue them underwater?

can you please post some pictures of your hydroids, there are several different types. I just almost killed my nano killing the digioid type.

I have a small colony that looks like the picture under REEFEY's name.
Is this type a problem?

Also, how do they spread? Only by spreading from the main colony, or will they pop up on the other side of my tank and in my sump?

They are Myrionema Hydroids. A nuissance like mine. They spread like wildfire in tanks that are overfeed commonly. Especially tanks supplimented with phyto. That's pretty much what happened in mine. Lack of husbandry for a while and overfeeding and you end up with the 'weed' of the reef. Things are looking up, but I'm trying to erradicate these last few colonies. I don't exactly know how they spread, but if you have 1 colony you'll see others pop up everywhere soon.

OOPS!%#@*

I've been cultivating a colony for a few months.

It's BEAUTIFUL!

Guess I'de better pull the plug on it now so they don't infest my tank.

Yeah, I think those are the stinging types too. Although, I stuck my hand in my tank and later that evening I had little welts on my fingers. I think I brushed up against some of mine. They do look pretty, though!

Oh, here's an idea on getting rid of them................ :uzi:
