I was wondering if anybody ever used one of those hob skilters(skimmer/filter combo)... if so was it worth a darn..would be on a 29g mini reef..will only have low light and low flow level beginer corals such as mushroms and polyps.... ( mostly conserned about the skimming part)

imo, hob's like the skilter filter are not worth it. you can get a better, decent skimmer for not much more than that filter anyway.

indydog1..its more space limitations than $$$$ i dont mind paying but iam having real issues with space... i only have 5 inches max behind the tank and 12 inches above the tank and the tank MUST go where its going since this tank is the wifes mini reef and the tank is in a wall unit cabinate that was made for my wife by her now deceased grandfather so it must go there with out any remodleing per wifes ORDERS...

I had a skilter on my last 29 and it wasn't great. I just set up a new 29 and have an AquaC remora next to a regular filter. I'm trying to get the remora dialed in now. The skilter I had was a red sea prizm deluxe. It was very temperamental and incredibly noisy. Not to mention it didn't pull much skimmate either. I would go with the remora if I were you. Its a bit noisy but nothing like that skilter.

Thanks for the replys... and noise is not an issue (i have 3 kids a grade school age or younger) if she (wife) would let me drill 1 friggen hole in the cabinate i could run an overflow and sump and would not have this issue because i would have the space for the skimmer...one darn hole for the overflow drain..there is already space for the return so its just one lousy friggen hole in my way

i buddy of mine ran a skilter filter and it did no good.i found him a berlin hob skimmer and if fit behind his 20. i think it was only like 3 inches in diameter and it wen like 6 inches above the tank. if i remember right.

OK how about this... i have a coralife super skimmer needle wheel protein skimmer modle number 220 rated at 500gph that i think i can make fit by moving the wall unit out by about 1.5 to 2 inches and its would be TIGHT removing the collection cup for cleaning but i can deal with that..

My question is..would that be tomuch flow for a 29g tank..i also have a korolia #1 and a hob filter rated at aprox 350 gph(used for breaking the water surfase only no filters cartrages installed).. the tank has only been up for one week and no livestock(fish or corals) sand, and base rock and a few pieces of live rock from my FOWLR tanks so i dont have a problem of breaking it down to move the cabinate a couple inches and starting over with the cycle

well if i move the wall unit out the 1.5 to 2 inches i could put it in a sump...would that help..(iam new to skimmers and reefs..the only thing i know a little about is FOWLR tanks and thats just a little bit....the sump can be either a modified 20g or 29g tank

if you can i would defineately add a sump. the benefits are great and then the skimmer can be put in down there and have the microbubble issue cured.

Just remember, Its always easier to ask for forgiveness, than it is for permission:eek1:

In this case it would be easier to pay child support payments and have another man living in my house that i paid for than getting permission to drill a hole and if i drilled a hole in it and asked for forgiveness ..well lets just say the above mentioned would be the easiest part of the punishment..... but at this point that is not an issue because i cant read a tape measure anyhow...back to the drawing board on how to do this..i can still move it out an inch or so and do a sump..i just have to get a SHORTER skimmer
