the vinegar trick is you put a handful of sand in a cup of vinegar, if it starts bubbling, there's some argonite in it, if it disappears by the next day it's completely argonite, similar to southdown.

Its white with MH from my experience.

But if you want to save 200$ and can settle with just a little tanner look, I dont see why not. There are tons of reefers using this stuff.

If you make a thread anywhere either than the SO Cal forum many will tell you that theyve had no problems with it. Some have used it for years!

As for teh argonite, youll need to do some buffing on your own, or just buy some hawaiin base rock from hirocks.com and your good to go!

will the cost of hawaiian base rock + shipping offset the savings you gained by going w/ play sand.

I'm interested in this thread because I'm setting up a 240g. that means 400lb + of "sand."

I don't think I'm going to cut corners on this one.. I'll just go "ala natural" lol.

Go to Ontario to save money , and cherry pick nice 12+inch pieces for around 2 bux

I did that and added LR on top, PH was stable, awesome stuff!

woah!!! I'm in Ontario weekly. I'll have to check it out tonight on my way home.

So you add some base rock, then some Fiji, Tonga, etc on top? I can see where it would save you money. You usually don't get to see the stuff on the bottom or in back.

Yes. The rock helps buff the water at 7.8-8.3. All you do after is add whatever rock u prefer on top to seed it and your good to go.

My 60g contents went into my 110g. I added more hawaiin base rock then some fiji, tonga,kaelini <--how do u spell this.
