I'm not sure but from what I have read I use to make a home made food thats pretty close to this food. I had mysis, brine shrimp, krill, clams, mussels, blood worms, cyclopeeze, dt's oyster eggs, formula 1 or 2 reef blend(can't remember which one). Not much fun to make but it was some really good food Maybe it would be cheaper to get a large group together and make some.

Hmmmm What an interesting idea. Where would you ever come up with such a thing?

I'm in if you guys want to make some or order some or whatever.

Bullet - Seeing as you've tried rods food how big are the packages of it and about how much do you feed and how long does it last for you?

So am i having a reef food making party? I did get a new blender for xmas!

I think if you tried to make it before and it wasnt fun maybe you just wern't drunk enough.

;)

It comes in a sandwich sized zip lock baggie. I feed about a quarter sized chunk about every other day. Again...I think it can really pollute you water if you feed too much!

That's up to you! ;) I still have the $25 gc to emporium I'll gladly go there and buy as much food as I can with it and donate all of it that way we can all benefit from it. I have tons of nori we can throw in with it (red and green) Lee did say that Petsmart will match online prices for frozen food too. So that might be a good way to get some stuff for the mix as well.

And we know Lee we know you want to make Randy's 2 part!

I did find you an ingrediant for it a work the other day. They were throwing this stuff on the ice to melt it! They had a great big bag of the stuff. I'll have to talk to the maintenance guys and see if I can score some!

Well the problem with that is having people actually get it after we order. Maybe we could do something like that right before the next big meeting. If we buy enough we might as well just call rod and order it directly from him. Ive talked to him before and he seemed like a cool guy ill bet he would hook us up.....

Being the next big meeting isnt until May it might be a problem, i want some soon.

Well, I thought the pizza party was before May too ;)

I have been wanting to make my own for awhile. The basic repipe I have is gelatin, squid, shrimp, oysters, clams, frozen brine, spinach, garlic, pearls, sea veggies. Mix all this stuff in a food processor & then add some Kent vitamins such as Marine-c, Zoecon, & coralvite. Mix it all up and put on a cookie sheet with an eggrate on it. Once frozen you can pop out the cubes.

I have about 10 dif. recipes I've been copying and pasting into a word file. Lots of variations in the mixes. Haven't heard the eggcrate thing yet though. Good idea for making cubes.

El nino and the mild winter is going to make for some real cool deals on Calcium Choride in the next few months. Lowe's is already dropping the price on the Prestone Driveway Heat.

Just for the record I didn't like Rod's food.

I like Rods food ingredients, but it is often not processed enough for me. I still feed it, but I process it further before I put it in the tank.

I have an old blender for making food.....the thought of drinking a mixed drink made out of a blender that made fish food.....nasty. Craig I'm not sure I would throw all the ingredients together in the blender, mainly because you tend to loose the texture. Also if you use pre-frozen cubes of food you won't need to use gelatin as the cubes already contain it. I've made several different batches with alot of different ingredients, my personal favorite was just using the frozen cubes, I thawed them slightly mixed them up and refroze them in the deep freeze. I would definitely feed this stuff lightly it's got a whole lot of stuff in a very small area. I would suggest that wherever you make it at have a big enough freezer to freeze all the food before its handed out. If things like cyclopeeze and other choice ingredients mixed in I wouldnt want to take the chance of the food spoiling, that could make for huge issues. I'm in if you guys want to make some, I would almost say it would be easier to order the frozen fod for fosters and smith, emporium is ok but it cost me around 90 to do the first batch I made. Fosters and Smith has the larger packs of food for a much cheaper price, and they have the whole selection in one place so theres no running here and there to pick up ingredients.

Well we could use your blender for the food and my new blender for margaritas.

I was at emporium last week to pick up some cyclopeeze. It looked as though everything in the freezer had melted and then been refroze. The cyclopeeze I got was in a different shape than it normally is... it hasn't seemed to hurt anything in the tank yet but I don't think I would buy any food from there for awhile. Petsmart price matches the frozen food...they have mysis, rotifers, squid, brine, formula 1, marine cuisine, plankton, and some other stuff.

Matt-

I actually went ice melt shopping today and couldn't find any of the brands randy had mentioned. I only checked menards and HD though. They had ice melt that contained calcium chloride, sodium chloride, and I think potassium chloride. The bags didn't say how much of each was in it so I didn't bother getting any.

Covey- Does Lowes sell the prestone? I wish I had gone there now!

Ditto. I'd defrost a good sized chunk and dump it in the tank only to find out it was like a big hunk of squid or fish or something and very little else.

Also I feed Oyster Eggs and Cyclopeeze from time to time and the seperate feeds got more of a reaction out of the corals than the Rod's all in one style. It makes me think that they cheaped out on the high dollar coral food and went with more affordable seafood.

Yep,
They had the 50# bags for like $17 and what look to be like a couple gallon jug for $9. At the Davenport one they have it right as you walk in.

Anyone now where I can get the Magnesium chloride? called Mag flake by Dow chemicals I think...

I need to make my own magnesium additives...pre bought are to expensive.

I would give Rods food a shot and see what it does..

ein

It is Dow Flake. I got it from a Cement Mixing place. Just call them up and ask for it. They mix it with the cement to make it cure faster.

Also the epsom salt is the magnesium component.

The dow flake is 99.9 percent pure Calcium Chloride
