Anyone aquaworld recently?

A few months ago i was there and saw all of their tanks on the decline, including the 5$ frag tank. Was wondering if anyone has been there recently and if the coral tanks were back up and "refreshed".

Dont want to make the trip if they have nothing for sale basically.

I was there a few weeks ago. I think their tanks looked much better than the last time I was there. The $5 frag tank had algae in it, but they are $5 so I could deal with that.

Make the trip and then head out 65 about 15 minutes and you can check out Dave's Aquastock on the same trip. How far of a drive is it for you?

I was there yesterday. The $5 tank was completely filled with small frags, no overt algae issues. The colony/frag tank beside it had some occasional valonia. There are a couple very clean display-only tanks, rimless with LED fixtures and vortechs, that offer a stark contrast to some of the older, algae and cyano plagued livestock tanks. The overall diversity of corals, saltwater fish was great; the pervasive ammonia smell from other animals in the store was not.

Went today, They cleaned up the 5$ tank but there are seriously no decent frags to choose from. a couple green zoas and some dead acropora frags, dead blastos, and some cloves. The same stuff they've had in that tank for about a year now, maybe longer.

The green bubble tips they've had in that basket (60$, you kidding me?) are inside out.

The limited edition zoas in their LED display are about 60$ a polyp i was told. LOL. I was also told they are on hold for a customer (they have been on hold for about 5 months now)

The xenia is sold by the stalk but they wont cut a single stalk for you so you have to spend 60$ on xenia if you want some.

The chalice tank in the back with the sign "ALL FRAGS IN THIS TANK ARE SOLD" is full of dying chalices and, like the zoa frags, have been in there for 4-6 months.

What is going on with this place? They have some cool stuff but just let it rot in their tanks for months. People dont want to pay premium dollar for your basic/normal chalice that is dying.

TIP: lower your prices or part out all your old stock by fragging it, people would be all over that ****. Until then, your corals are just dying and will soon be worth nothing. Actually, I take that back - you'll just throw the skeleton in that coral decoration bin for 20$

To be fair... it is a $5 frag tank. To that end, the stock in it is in fact quickly rotated. They may frag the same types of corals to replinish, but they do moce quickly

Xenia turns to slime when it is cut or handled... so selling by the rock is really the only reasonable method. I am sure that if you were that interested in it, they would allow a few stalks to migrate to some rubble and you could pick it up next visit.

No store is perfect, but at least we have local stores where we can look at livestock before purchase and/or puchase dry goods when there is an immediate need.

Was there a couple of weeks ago was not impressed at all, i know im new to the hobby, but couldn't really get any help from anyone. was like i was bothering them or something. dead fish in alot of tanks. frag tank couldn't even see frags at all. then try to ask question and it was like i was an idiot or something.

just not really impressed at all

I know they had some issues in the last few weeks and that was because jeff was spending 18 hrs a day tring to get very thing inventoried and into there new computer system. If you really want almost any of the coral there make sure you ask for jeff or call before you go. He handles all the pricing and Ming isn't totally sure of what all the prices are

I have been spending most of my coral funds there and how can you complain about $5 frags?

I haven't been there in a while but they also "play" their inventory very well. They know when people buy livestock and adjust their inventory accordingly. The holidays are always slow for coral sales since everyone has to buy their kid the gi joe with the Kung fu grip and money is low. Typically they start to ramp things back up till summer when it slows again for coral sales.

I stopped in saturday and got some pretty nice stuff. the $5 tank was looing great and stocked with new stuff. Got a deepwater acro, frag very similar to garf bonsai, small blasto colony, chalice frag, new acans

i stop in there a few times a month and this was definitely not the normal stuff that has been in the frag tank

i was in there a couple weeks ago and everything was covered in algae .. i made a hour and a half trip for the frag tank specials and it was a wasted trip thats for sure.. happy to hear that the frag tank is back up and running with better deals.. however prop wont make that drive any time soon rather buy one nice coral local than be disappointed again with high fish prices and over priced coral colonies..

they currently have two of the best tanks i have ever seen in a Pittsburgh store. People complaining about tanks full of 5$ frags is absurd. If you plan on making the a long trip give the place a call. I would want to show up when Jeff is working.

Correction yurko, tanks full of 5$ algae and aiptasia frags. We're complaining about the lack of decent frag stores in the Pittsburgh area.

wow, when was the last time you were there??? The frag tank is almost spotless.

Sounds like someone has an axe to grind about something else??

Play nice, everybody. We all have our opinions of said place positive and negative and this gets us nowhere.

i don't see how anyone could complain about a 5 frag tank at a lfs.... most of us sell our corals for more.
yes I've seen questionable stuff there, but guess what i don't buy it. i dislike when i see a post about someone that bought something (coral or fish) from a lfs that they feel hurt there set up. its up to you to ask the questions and RESEARCH for yourself . they are there to sell a product, if its not right for you don't buy it.

I don't think we would be complaining if we hadn't already researched over the course of many years in the hobby.

If you've ever been to a decent LFS in ANY OTHER semi-large city, you'd know Pittsburgh is lacking in the frag department. That's what this thread stems from.

The store in question could make simple alterations to it's practices and easily be a magnificent store opposed to a disgusting scam. There's nothing wrong with voicing this, I hope it's received and changes are made for the better.

Have you been to the other stores in the area? You seem to be only picking on aquaworld

what about the others....wet pets and their $29.99 dying frag tank
elmers and their bleached out and dying ora tank
seahorse and there 10 overpriced frags on little racks

but you still hound aqauworld for offering frags from $5 up to high end jf corals. there are no stores there are going to have everything you want in the condition you want. Maybe you should stick to online shopping instead, but oh wait, i know somebody who recently ordered a bunch of monti's from one of the higher end online places and they came covered in nudi's and eggs

good luck
