I am working on a stand for a 30 gallon cube and I plan on using 3/4" aspen pine for the sides. Now I had planned on using 2x3's but because the stand is only 25" wide and about 18" deep I am not going to do the framing, only the outsides nailed together. I am going to put in a partition in the middle so I can house a mini sump on one side and then a power panel and storage area on the other side. dsparks has a nice thread on his stand.
the problem with using 2x4s on such a small footprint is that it would be overkill(by a longshot) and it would be wasting valuable space inside the stand
on a larger tank stand I would go with a poplar frame because it would be truer.--2x4s are never staight or true
i made one for my 30gal. goldfish tank you could probably put a car on this thing and hold it up lags are 2 2x4s cut at 45 degrees screwed together then used 1x8s to close it up. little ovekill gives me piece of mind over the pressboard stands http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a343/nomadfkr/fishtank001.jpg
