Anyone close to Lebanon, TN

I am a newbie, and I have a 75 gallon aquarium setup. I have a blue tang, diamond gobie, peppermint shrimp, snails, crabs, and a toadstool leather coral. I have liverock and sand in the tank. I have one powerhead, sump, protein skimmer, and an overflow. I live in Lebanon, TN, and I wanted to check to see if anyone lived close, that could possibly take a look at my tank, just to make sure that everything is running perfectly and to give me some tips. This is my first setup and I bought it from a local.

Hi Scott!

Welcome to the wonderful world of reefing, as well as MTRC and ReefCentral. :)

I am sort of close, but I believe there are some who are closer.

If you're not having any leaks and the animals seem happy, you're probably ok, though. :) I would suggest getting some test kits if you have not yet and keep an eye on your ammonia and nitrates to begin with.

Did you get everything from someone else? Or did you piece everything together?

The reason I ask is because if you just put everything together and then tank hasn't cycled yet, you may run into some problems.

Thanks. I did receive everything from one person.

I checked my water, and everything seems to be fine, except my PH is a little high.

But I would rather have someone take a look to make sure that everything is running perfectly, and give me any tips on it. I would pay for gas. I have tried to get a hold of the guy who sold it to me, but he does not return calls now. I would rather have someone take a look and make sure everything is great versus my luck of something going wrong becuase I forgot to do something because I was not aware of what to do or something is not working right.

My blue tang is still shy, the tang comes out and swims around and then as soon as the tang sees you, it takes off behind a rock. The goby is out, my toadstool keeps coming in and out. Not really sure what is going on with it.

And I did notice that when I run my lights on all day, my temp reaches about 81 degrees in the tank.

I really appreciate any help.

Hi Scott, and welcome to the MTRC boards, glad you are here. It sounds like you are off to a good start and I can remember very well about my first set up and wanting someone to come out and look at it. I live in Murfreesboro and looks like I can drop by on Sunday afternoon if you would like me to it would have to be around 1 or 2 pm sunday if thats ok. You can PM your address & phone number to me if that time is ok or if you want to set this up over the phone, you can call me at five one nine 3726.

pH tends to be low in tanks and this will most likely fall with a little bit of time. What is high?

My guess would be that whatever salt you used mixes a little high on alkalinity... and I'll offer a guess that it is Instant Ocean?

Been trying to work on a blog that goes over some of the things I learned in getting into this hobby that would hopefully be really informative for noobs and still be interesting enough for folks who have been around the block a bit. Here's an article I wrote on the basics of pH that you might learn something from (http://reefnook.com/blogs/DMBillies/category/maintenance/water-chemistry/)

Blue tangs can sometimes be shy. Just give her some time to settle in. Leather corals very commonly go in and out throughout the day, so don't panic there.

And I did notice that when I run my lights on all day, my temp reaches about 81 degrees in the tank.[/B]

That's not too bad... but fans are your friend..

Would like to write more (as I always do), but I gotta run.
