Anyone done or seen this?

i think im going to try this out and see what it looks like. im thinking of putting a piece of wood that matches the exact color of my stand and conopy behind the tank and using it as a background. not in the tank obviously but behind it mounted on the stand so it doesnt fall. the wood color is kinda a dark cherry wood i guess. i have no idea what it would look like but i think it might be kinda interesting to match the stand and everything. anyone see problems with this other then possible funky looking?

i don't see any problems unless the the tank is drilled then they would make it a bit hard to do. In my house we have a exposed wood walls...an old look lol but it shows through. after some time goes by coral line will cover it up for you. Bet it would look cool though. Just make sure water does not get between the tank and the wood.

there would be about a 1/8 inch gap between the wood and glass, the tank isnt drilled so that solves that problem :) do you have any pictures of the wood showing through on your tank?

i'm sorry i thought i had some when i first set up my tank now all you can see is algae. a black or blue back ground would make the rocks and corals stand out more though..i know i changed mine on my new tank and it did.

i had a black background on my 30 and dont care to much for the blue. was just thinking of something different

I think it is hard to say, it might look good and might look funky. If you have the spare wood, why not? but if you don't, kinda expensive to try and find out it looks bad......

becuase everyone has black and blue, its getting old. i want something different :) iv seen someone do purple background before and everyone told him to just make it black. after it was done it looked amazing and nobody thought it would :) like i said, i want something different.

i think the wood would be a cool idea - but it wouldnt necessarily have to match your stand - why not take some weathered wood?
sorta like a sunken ship type wall...

an easy way to weather wood is - and dont laff...
wet it with the hose then spray with 1 part bleach to 3 parts water - let sit for 2 hrs... rinse with hose
keep doing this until you get the desired effect - it works best on darker woods like redwood

:)

Keep in mind it may to tricky to match the exact color because once the tank lights hit the background it will look a different shade than it did with room lights hitting the stand. (soft white room lights about 3000k vs tank lights anywhere from 10000k-20000k) Looking through the glass and water would also have the same effect, so it may take some tinkering with different colors/shades until you find one that matches while looking through the tank and lights.

it wont look right with the reflection off the glass, like others have said the reason black and blue are so common is because it is closest to what the ocean looks like . you can try painting it a different color like purple or pink maybe
