Anyone ever make DIY Live Rock?

I've got the just of it down from watching several yuotube videos. Basically I think I know how I will make it, but need a little more insight. Here's my questions.

1) What did you learn through mistakes?

2) Most people say they use playsand from Home Depot, has anyone here used it successfully?

3) How did you cure your product? How long?

i made two rocks but nothing compared to like marco rock or anygood rock, im sure if i put it in saltwater for awhile it would be better purple algae or more practice. its the the curing of it that concern me to the point that i will gladly buy cheap base rock and cure it vs making my own. if you decide to go down that path let me know, i got atleast 25-50lbs of crush oysters and 100lbs of that cement needed.
