Anyone ever microwaved live rock?

Hey guys,
I've got about 20lb's live rock from my old tank the problem is it's all covered in aiptasia anemones... I read about someone microwaving there live rock, a few pounds a week or so. All they did was take it out of the tank and microwave it then give it a quick wash (if i remember right) and then stick it right back into the tank.
Has anyone done this? What are some other methods to get rid of a few hundred aiptasia's?

Thank you very much,

~Nick

You'd be better off removing the rock from the tank, put it it in a tub with a heater and powerhead and nuke the Aptasia with Kalkpaste. Microwaving it will basically kill everything in/on it and probably result in an ammonia spike from all the die off.

i second what seapug said. try to avoid anything that could lead to an amonia spike and that are also a bunch of benifical creatures your killing off too when you microwave the rock.

I remember a thread from a while back where some guy was boiling his live rock, and aparently inhaled something that made him very sick, hospitalized. I believe the speculation was from some zoas on the rock.

Oh man... this would smell so bad..... like a dead goat left in the arizona sun for three days bad......

Yeah, haha i wasn't going to tell my parents if i did do this. but i might try to kalk paste if i figure out what i need to do.

Thanks guys!

Nick

a microwave heats things by using radiation to heat up water particles within what its heating, thus using a microwave could leak some harmful radiation into your tank. Thats why it is not wise to stare into a microwave.

Um, are you suggesting that microwaving rocks will make them radioactive? The only way that the microwave is going to put "harmful radiation" into the tank is if he puts the whole tank in the microwave...

Lol you should probably not microwave too much food then, or you might start to glow green.

Anyways, there are a number of fish/inverts that will eat the aptasia. Peppermint shrimp worked great for me.
