Anyone experienced with ball anemone

I have one just like this. Do they spread much, move much, eat much. Anyone spot feed them?

How large is your ball anemone? The reason I ask is because there are basically two varieties: the large Caribbean variety, and the rather small Pacific variety.

I have a large orange-ball anemone (Pseudocorynactis, Caribbean) in my tank. It gets fed every night and is a huge eater. It never moves from its rock, and I don't think they ever do. With good feeding, they will eventually split. They can also be fragged extremely easily from what I've heard. The major problem with them is that they can be very greedy and go after mobile inverts and even fish. If you feed them well, this doesn't seem to occur. This is really only a problem with the Caribbean variety, as the Pacific ones only get to like half an inch.

Mine is small like the one in the photo. The disk is no more than half an inch. We'll see how big it gets. I'm thinking its the pacific type.

The ones that I am aware of that are from the Pacific are found off the US coast (and thus come from temperate waters.) Perhaps there are other Pacific species as well.

You're thinking of Corynactis sp., a.k.a. the strawberry anemone, which is a temperate only creature. These are Pseudocorynactis sp., which are similar, but live in tropical waters.

Hoping that this post isn't dead...

I have sevral of these, started with one, but now I have a 4. They are spreading very slowly, but are spreading. So I'd like to know if they are in fact harmful in anyway.

I've kept them for several years, the first one my dive buddy collected and until an extended power out this winter was actually reproducing regularly. The sad news is in Dec we had an extedned power outage and I lost everything in the tank except for some rock anemones and macro algea. If I see another one while diving I will collect it, I like having it in the tank even if they are very nocternal.

Here is the adult

Last year these started showing up, there were a lot at first but only 3 survived to grow to a larger size.

The adult was 5 to 6 inches across when open fully and ate anything I put in it's reach including frozen silversides and other meaty foods. The only problem I have with them is mine do not open up when there is any lights on, even the blue atinic. Towards the end it would not close if I turned the moonlights on, but it would not open if they were left on.

Okay, the last pic is just like mine, but they don't seem to care about the moon lights. Once the blues are off, they spread out full force. I guess I'll leave them alone. Sometimes you win with hitchhikers an somtimes you lose....

wow i now i know what those are. i get water from my store that get it from the ocean and i guess they has some of them in it. i got like 2 in my 10 gal sea horse tank and 6 in my 29 fish/non photosynthetic tank.

5 years later and this thread is still helpful. I have discovered a couple of these on some live rock I bought recently. I have been trying to identity them. Never could take a good enough picture worth posting to ask for help. I am glad to see they are nocturnal since I was otherwise thinking about placing them farther from the light to encourage them to open more. Mine florese under the blue LED lights.

This thread is still helping people. Found this little guy in my tank on some rock that's been sitting dormant for years.
