Anyone going to Rod's?

I was wondering if anyone from the Chicago area is going to Rod's. I want to try some of his food and is to much of a haul for me.

Rod's pretty strict about, if you want some. You really have to come to the store yourself. The reason is, there is so low profits if any, from the rods food. That he likes people to atleast come by so they can atleast have a chance to, maybe buy something.

Rod's food is now available from premiumaquatics.com so you can just buy it yourself. It's in their food/DT's phytoplankton section I beleive.

i dont agree with teremei.

rod is not about pushing a sale just bec you come and visit him. so i do not agree that he wants you to come by personally so he can sell you something else bec the food does not bring him a gain.

maybe if these people get a chance to try his food they might take there own trip or buy it in the future.

i agree and if it was a issue id think he would have been smart enough to tell premium not to sell to zip codes zxy so people would have to drive and see him:-)

I don't know Rod but I would let him speak for himself.

Frankly it is hard to drive two hours to Dekalb to buy fish food. That would cost me about $20 in gas and my time is worth way more than that.

I would think Rod would be thrilled to get new customers, and any profit he can get would be a benefit. I don't think the food is a "loss leader" sold at a loss to get people in the store. I also would be interested in Onyx clowns as mentioned so there goes the theory and I am sure many other people would be interested in Rod's other products if there was an internet sight or emailable inventory list we could get our hands on. The city is underserved and overpriced when it comes to LFSs, but to balance that the NW and far W suburbs are a PITA to get to/from, which is why I live in the city in first place.

I would rather give Rod the money directly then paying Premium Aquatics so they take their cut and then pay an additional $20 to ship the products in dry ice. That being said Premium Aquatics is an A+ establishment.

Pscheel,

buy it from Premium!

I believe this is the whole reason why Rod hooked up with Premium Aquatics to distribute his food all across the US. If you want it, you can buy it from Premium. It will costya $30 bucks, but you can get it anytime. If ya wanna drive for it, Rod prefers if you only want to pick up a bag or two. Plenty to keep any aquarium stocked for a while.

If you have ever seen the magic brew being prepared, it's a pain in the rump, time consuming, and portions / sizes / mixes are something Rod is very mindful of. Definately worth the premium, as the fish and following can attest.

Also, Pscheel, I will take a leisurely 12-15 minute flight there from Naperville or Schaumburg. Happy to have you tag along for the ride - a few people have. The trip is worth the time, though you get your fish and corals addicted to the reef crack that Rod sells. (DT's, oyster eggs, mysis, all kinds of other crap that Rod puts in it)...

glbtrottr-

Sorry to Hijac but if your going I'd love to take a trip with you.... I love going to Rods but hardly ever make it there and I've never been in a small plane.

Thx
Adam

Not intended as a hijack. I made an offer to PScheel and that stands, no doubt Rod appreciates the business.

I have a Cessna 172 I keep at Clow Airport, in Plainfield / Bolingbrook. Seats 4. Most widely sold / safest perceived airplane in the whole fleet. Chances are most modern pilots learned to fly in one, if not most learned on a J3 cub - a long time ago.

I also have a Mooney M20K Turbo, quite a bit faster and pricier to operate. I keep that at Naperville 1/4 mile from where I live.

Fuel is measured in gallons per hour in a plane. $3.99 per gallon. The C172 plane burns 7-8 gallons per hour. 2-3 gallons for takeoff ($12). 15 minute flight. Not including insurance ($680 a year), parking ($45 a month), or maintenance costs...

Do the math...

Planes land at Dekalb airport. Rod's is around 2+ miles from there.

Dekalb maintains a courtesy car (or 3), which you borrow at no cost. The last time Jason and I were there, the one we used was the Red Suburban Airport Firetruck with the flashing lights - it was fun to show up at Rod's with flashing lights...

I go there every two weeks or every month, but if anyone wants to come along on a road trip, happy to be the bus driver. Will fly for frags...

glbtrottr, thanks for the offer. I might take you up on that. Since so many people want his food, we can plan road trip. My truck will seat an additional 4 reefers. I have a vacation week the 3rd week in Sept. (Just didn't want to wait that long for the food). Something to think about. Looks like he has a lot of nice corals too. :D

Here's the deal for you Chicago boys, you pick up a couple of rbta's from Dag (in Chicago) for me, and I'll get your food and we'll meet at Scotts in Westchester. :)

2 hr drive...

if rod ever has an event at his place, im going to fly from pa. so personally im jealous of anyone within driving distance.

work

work

I work for Rod if you want something I live about 50 minutes away from Chicago so I am a little closer so you can ask me I might be able to pick it up from him and u could just stop by my place I will have to talk it over with Rod to make sure this will be ok with him but if u want something but dont want the drive send me a pm im sure we can work something out.

Another idea for Rod's food......

Do a group order from Premium Aquatics. This brings the price per packet down significantly. Find out from Rod what the expiration is on his food and personally resevere enough for yourself in one order to max out the exipration window.

Going there is always my first option. Remember to ALWAYS call ahead of time to check his store hours.
