Anyone had power outages?

I had one on Monday, and let me tell you, it was not fun. Of course I am still in the planning stages of my 22g (thank goodness) but I have my 75g discus tank up and running. Well, Monday was the hottest day yet, it hit 115F! And the power went out. The worst part was, I was at work and it takes me about 1.5hrs to get home in traffic.

Sent wife to buy a battery powered pump since she couldn't find my reserved one for emergencies.

I got home about 2hrs later and took out my media from the sump, put it in a juice container with an airline hose under it. Also floated ice in the containers. After all it was 115F outside and about 100 inside!

Here's the pic whilst the power was off and before it came on:

Power was off for right around 24hrs

When the power came back on:

I could hardly see my discus lol

They get daily 70% water changes so I had the barrel full ready for this

after WC:

Still murky!

Cleared up well and they are all acting normal. In fact, the all acted normal through this whole thing. I had a lot of bacteria die off on me, hence the cloudiness, but enough of it is in tact that it didn't really affect them. Relied on SAFE to neutralize any ammonia or nitrite but none was present that I observed. Will do their daily WC tonight when I get home but called the Mrs. and she said they look perfect.

Moral of the story?

Ricky really wishes he had money for a generator....

No, but I made sure the battery back up was working on my tunze pump near the surface. Double checked the fans and auto top offs. Then put some bottles of frozen RO/DI water in before I left for a few hours.

Just had a 6 hour power outage here in LA, I think I'll be buying a generator.
Same here. However, it is something I will have to save up for and summer times are the highest probability of power loss.

We had a hurricane go through locally...power off for 5 days. If you didn't have a generator, you started your tank all over.
5 days? That really stinks. I don't know how you did it. Of course in a span of 5 days, I'm sure other things become top priority as well, not just the fish. The family aspect of it must have been difficult to manage as well.

Very smart man ;)

why do you do 70% wc daily for discus?

That is the only way I know how to get huge discus :). I'm aiming for an 8" discus and a couple of these might reach that. I generally feed about 3-4 times daily and 2 of which are beef heart mix which foul the water badly. Large wc's are absolutely necessary
