Take your water In to the Critter they test for free! And a good Mag test kit Is not that expensive anyway. I have one that I used and the readings didn't seem right so I tested It against another kit that was almost empty and It was way off or I would LYBI.
If your going to use Tech-m for your problem, I used 2 16oz bottles In my 185 and never tested It and that much worked to kill mine. Then I just started my regular water changes after It died. If you can guesstimate from my usage be my guest, raising It slowly a little each day until you reach your target amount works without any harm to the tank In my case anyway. Your really not going to do any major harm by not testing as long as you don't over do It JMHO
