Anyone have an Eibli angel in their reef tank?

I have one on hold...reading through RC to see what others experiences with them in reef tanks were. Seems they are about 50/50 on the reef-safeness scale. Any experiences with them please let me know.

I read up on them a little and it seems they like to nip at inverts and occasionally at corals. Nothing was too specific though : /

I have one. Had it in with zoa's and acans and it picked at them to the point they were all dying. Had to break down the tank to get it out. Put it in a sps only tank and seems to be ok.

I would say pass on it.

I had an Eibli Mimic Tang. Looks just like the Angel as a Juvenile, but is obviously less of a safety concern. Not sure if the Angel's color fades as an adult, but I know the Tang's will. Mine was pretty bright the entire time I owned it (lost it in an extended power outage along with my Anthias).

The younger the Tangs are, the brighter their coloration. I ordered mine from Blue Zoo Aquatics and had them cherry pick me a bright one when they got a shipment in. I figure most online places would give you the same treatment (if you can't find one at a LFS).

Hope that helps.

Ray- did you get yours from WetPets?
TJ- Yeah supposedly the tangs color fades drastically as it gets older.

Yeah doesn't look too good on the Eibli. There is a guy on RC who did an excel spreadsheet on angels and reef-safeness from a large RC member survey. I am actually seriously looking at putting a Majestic angel in instead at this point as they seem to do pretty well at leaving things alone. Seems like people are having good luck with them in their reefs. Something like 80%+ reefsafe.

Yep they'll fade to a drab brownish grey I believe as adults. Not sure how long it takes for that to happen though. Have you thought about a Regal Angel?

Yes I have thought about a Regal too. I was leaning more towards a Majestic if I did pull the trigger on one just because they seem hardier and less high maintenance. That and seems like Regals from what I have read on here almost always eat people's zoas and polyps which is mostly what I have in my tank currently.

I ended up passing on the Eibli angelfish. Stopped back in at Wetpets tonight. They had a Red Sea Regal for $249.99! :eek1: I don't understand their pricing on some things down there.

Darn you TJ...you had to mention a Regal! Re-read the whole regal primer, now I have one coming in Wednesday because I like them even better than Majestics.:crazy1:

regal's are beautiful!! once i get my bigger fowlr rollin that was my angel of choice as well. post up some pics when you get him. i also remember reading that depending on where they come from some are hardier than others. but i cant remember which was what

Yeah mine is a 5" Vanuatu Regal. He is from Phishy Business in Columbus. He has been there a month and is eating mysis, brine, and nori in QT.

I still may end up getting a juvi Majestic as well. Trying to finish off my fish list over the next few months.

Majestics don't always play nice with softies. My mom had to move hers to her FOWLR because of nipping issues.

I bought a regal angelfish from NYAquatic. Think I paid $70 for him. He was healthy, and survived in my 120 system for about 6 months. Got ich while I was on vacation and I couldn't save him :thumbdown Mine never messed with my zoas or anything for that matter. He was a model citizen.

That is what I am hoping too. Phishy Business has had this one in QT over a month and its already eating frozen and nori so I'm hoping for the best with my corals since its already eating prepared foods.
