Just bought my friends 55...it has a cascade canister on it now, and its kinda a pain in the you know what...i get a nice stream of microbubbles every minute or so and I have worked on it quite a bit, plus there junk anyways from what I hear....Anyone need to sell anything that would well work for a 55? If not, any reccomendations on what to buy new?
thanksss

Not sure what a cascade canister is, but from the name "cascade", is it the type of filters where the output falls into the tank like a waterfall? Or are the bubbles coming from within the filter itself?

And bubbles are coming from filter itself...I hear a BUZZ every minute or so then theres a whole bunch of bubbles shot into the tank. . . This filter has stackable media{lots of floss....bag of carbon, 2 bags of ceramic rings, all with layers of floss inbetween}, water goes down through it then is sucked back up from the bottom.

The only way you can get bubbles from a canister filter is if the intake is too close to the surface where it sucks in air or maybe there is a hole somewhere along the intake hose.

laura,

the micro bubbles are caused by the trapped air in the canister filter. i suggest tilting the canister a bit to its side with the return (to the tank) side higher. this will allow air pocket to go up the return hose. this is a fairly common issue with canister filters.

the noise you hear is caused when the air pocket gets too big. the canister's pump mechanism is exposed to mostly air so it has to push the air up. this is why the noise then the burst of bubbles.

canister filters aren't that bad. it all depends on what you're trying to setup. reef= not ideal; fish only = will work fine.

My guess is one of the seals is leaking, either the quick disconects or the lid for the filter. That style filter can be good for holding your carbon and removing particulates from the water, but need cleaning often. Is that the only filter you have for the tank?
I would get a skimmer and a sump/refugium of some sort for your tank. If your not going to have a sump then a HOB refugium could be used.

shake the canister, there must be air trap inside. Put the return hose away from the intake, otherwise the problem keep repeating.

Laura It looks nice. From my experience, Nitrates are not the big deal most people make them out to be. I will not tell you how high they have been in my tank. I tried all sorts of things to reduce them and no really worked except changing my sump around to allow room for more macros algae. Most people that see my tank are shocked when I tell them that my Nitrates are finally down to less then 40. So basically I am recommending the biggest sump you can fit under your stand.

I have an Emperor 400 you can have also. It's missing a couple pieces right now but I can get them for you and it will be good as new. Its yours if you can make it to 93063 or if you want to meet halfway. I need to go to LA in a few days anyhow.
I have an extra powerhead, also.

Looks good. I'd sell that canister filter or use it as a door stop. Invest your time in a cheap fuge. Rubbermaid container + clamp on light + macro algae will cost you less than $35. Looks like you'll also need a hang on overflow, you can find them used for $40-$50. It will do more filtering than that canister will do, feed your tank, AND keep it stable.

By the way, that is not a prizm skimmer...it is a CPR bakpak. Probably about 10 times better than a prizm but still not the best skimmer. Great for your size tank especially when combined with the coral life.
