anyone have equipment to donate for a good cause?

I work at a facility that has about 200 residents with mental retardation (Clover Bottom Developmental Center). We have a gentleman here that wants a fish tank in his bedroom so I have the intentions of just getting him a 20 gallon freshwater setup going. So looking for all of the components except livestock.
Has to be cosmetically decent stuff. If I don't have any luck here, I'll just go buy one. 20 gallon setup shouldn't cost too much, but the incidentals add up over time.
thanks,
casey

note: Doesn't HAVE to be a 20 gallon, but that may be the easiest for me to teach his caregivers how to tend to it. I'll be doing most of the maintenance, but not long term.

2nd note: I saw a thread over at West TN forum. They're doing a group project at a hospital in Memphis to get a reef tank going there. This is the perfect type of facility to have something as beautiful as a reef tank in a commons area....just an idea for the future maybe.

I have a ten gallon tank with a little filter that you can have if you need it. I have filled that tank twice as a quarrantine for about a day each with a sick fish, it is like new. I have found we just don't use it.

If jfollies is to small (but perfect for a small FW QT) ( I find they are more sick than SW ussually) and if you don't want to drive all over gathering parts (I have some decorations) I am sure people can donate $5 each Via the mail and you can just get a all inclusive box kit at wal mart. I have parts but use mine regularly on SW QT's but will send you some money......
PM me you address and I will pay for my frag and add $5 for something for the tank.

ashort--Let's hold off on funds until there's a bit more of a consensus on feasibility. You can give Gary the $ for the frag. He'll at least bring me half of it back. :)

jfolley--thanks for the 10g offer. I'll hold out for a 20. You need to keep that as a Q tank anyways! :)

ARRRRGGGHHHHH!!! I just gave all my freshwater stuff away like 5 weeks ago!
Still, I think this is a really good thing to do, so let me know if you decide to accept some funds.

Re: anyone have equipment to donate for a good cause?

I worked until last month at night as a MOD at Clover Bottom. As you know, there are small FW tanks in many of the living units that aren't maintained very well. A few are even unused and maybe could be put in the room that you wanting it for.

BTW, what living area would it be going into?
Are you going to help maintain it?

cool, didn't know you were here. A small one would be going into an individual's room in Harpeth....just a FW.

A reef tank could go into Clement.

I got a 29 gallon tank that is pratically brand new. I bought it brand new and only used it for a couple months as a QT tank. It's got the top and lighting(but the bulb was broken during storage) a sponge filter, and heater. No stand! If your interested, just give me a call and we'll work out a time to do this.

Woooh. I thought it was a 90/10 split-me/you:D.

I like the idea of setting up a reef tank with softies and maybe some LPS (anemones for those who know what they are now, and they are easy to keep) for a general viewing area. Since seeing the post in West Tn. where they are helping out St. Judes tanks, I've been wanting something nice that the club could help out with. I'd be glad to offer up some time to help out and I'll look through old equipment to see what I've got. I'm thinking something along the lines of a larger type tank to make fluctuations less drastic (90-125 or something along those lines) and I'm thinking something with a sump to make maintenance a little easier and potential problems fewer. Let's hear some opinions from club members, so we can maybe work on some sort of plan. This doesn't have to be something we rush into and try to knock out quickly, but I think it would be a good thing for the club to do. Just my $0.02.

I'm in for any help I can give, I think it's a great "Club Project".
I was thinking about trying to put something together for our surgical waiting area at the hospital, I even have the hospital CEO's permission.
Since talking with some of the family members, after waiting hours for a major surgery on a loved one, I think it would help with some of the thought's that go through their minds, or at least give them something to look at that is positive (not just day time television, which more often than not is negative).
I'm in, Clover Bottom, or anywhere else, when what we know can help others!
SOMETIMES IT'S NOT JUST A HOBBY.....IT'S HELP! (think about it)

I've also got a pretty much complete 29 gal setup, minus heater.

Light, cover, biowheel filter, no stand. You guys are welcome to it if you want.

Gary, I too read the posts in the WTN thread in regards to St. Judes. I was hoping we could do something like that with a local hospital or maybe even Vandy childrens. I am in to help when I possibly can.

I think this is a good idea in general, but you have to consider that Clover Bottom is a very different place than a waiting room.

First, be sure that someone (greystreet or someone else) is committed to help maintain the tank. I would have been more than happy to volunteer to help but no longer work out there due to my upcoming move to NC. SW tanks are nice but poorly maintained reef tank is not.

Second, some residents can at time have very violent outbursts. I know of chairs being thrown, glass doors being broken, etc. This is not the case everywhere, so could be overcome. There are current FW tanks set up in various places. Many have 100+ guppies in a 10 gallon tank. :)

I do not have any equipment to offer. I do think its great greystreet41 you are helping out someone in need like this. Give them back your knowledge you have obtained about the hobby and allow someone else to enjoy it. On even a larger scale I really like the idea about Vandy's Childrens Hospital. It would allow all of us to give back the knowledge and let others experienc the beauty of this hobby. Not to mention the relaxing calm it has on people. Maybe this is a topic we can speak about at our meeting?

I have to agree that there is something very calming about an aquarium.

Vandy Children's Hospital or even the Vanderbilt main lobby (which has an ICU waiting area) or the Trauma Unit waiting area would be good places. One or more local shops might be willing to help out as well as it would be good advertising for them. St. Thomas has a huge ICU waiting room as well.

BTW, there is a reef nice tank on the 8th floor of the new Medical Center East building in the waiting room of the Pediatric Diabetes clinic. It can be viewed from the outside hallway, so you don't have to invade the clinic to see it. If you are every at Vandy you should take a look at it. I have been told there is also a tank in the Occupational Health clinic, but I have not seen it.

I'll be happy to help however I can. I got rid of most of the funtional equipment I don't use anymore a while back but I have a couple of things left and may have more after the move. I would also be happy to purchase a piece of new equipment that is needed. Just let me know what you need. Cloverbottom has a special place in my heart and thanks guys for doing your good work there:)
Chris
