Anyone have tyree chalice frags?

Not sure if they're tyree's or not, but TJ is the only one around here who really had all that many chalices, and even he only had 5 or 6 total. I'm sure someone around here can chime in, but there just doesn't seem to be a lot of people keeping them in the PGH area. If they are, they definitely haven't actively sought to sell them.

I think Mike over at Captive Reef has a few, check is site.

Totally forgot about him. You're right. He at least had some listed last time I was on his site about a month ago. I also wondered if maybe you had some too, but I know you're more of a polyp guy than a chalice guy, and my 2 chalices (neither tyree, but I doubt if that makes a difference for the purpose of what I'm about to say) stung the crap out of all my polyps I put near it.

I have one i bought at a frag swap that is supposed to be a tyree. There is no documentation and it really isnt that colorful.

I have TJ's "steel blue" chalice- looks ok -actually a grayish-blue color- was doing well until the brain coral decided to sting the crap out of it- so 1/2 dead currently. I am going to try to get together with TJ for some frags this weekend.

Try looking on fragswapper.com. The Cleveland swap is coming up in April and you can reserve frags on there. There are usually people selling tyree stuff there.

This is what concerns me, I bought a couple Tyree frags last night but the store has no documentaion. I asked for some and this is what they said.

"them you got it from us and it should be ok. noone ever sell anything with paper work. If u ask that in the public then they would just laugh at you. just a heads up so u dont get laughed at if u ever wanted to ask. Thanks for the purchase. your frags will be cut and healed and should be ready to ship out mid next week..

mike and annette

i dont have anything but high end stuff and real tyree stuff.. everyone know that we have real tyree stuff.. if u ever wanna sell it then you tell"

Not very comforting.

I think I'm about to learn something new so please bare with me as I'm new to the corals end of this.

When I get my canopy done with MH's and get spa corals I should receive paperwork with it validating what it actually is?

do you mean sps? Normally you would never get paperwork if you buy corals, but if you are shelling out 200 dollars an eye for a Tyree...then sometimes you want to make sure you are getting a Tyree. I wouldn't really care too much if I didn't want to sell some later on.

I have never seen anyone get paperwork. The lineage is usually just documented by who you purchased it from. This is one of the biggest problems out there right now. You kind of have to go off of reputation and trust. Trouble is vendors are popping up left and right online.

Like with ORA coral, you didn't get a paper but they always used those wacky rubber plugs that everyone hates.

Seems like there should be a better system for this. Some Tyree coral go for 1000 and eye; just seems like a lot of money to spend and not know what you are getting.

Ok, so I really have to say something here. I'm taking for granted you guys are looking to grow these out and frag them to make money. This may or may not work out well for you. Over the years I've seen the prices of corals go up and down. Once they get into the market and get distributed around, the price tends to fall. I personally can't see paying 200 dollars per eye for any coral. That being said, I do have the Bazooka Joes in my tank. Two of them actually. Both with more than 5 eyes. Both were given to me.

And no Bill, no one gives paperwork that I know of.

I agree they should. Like Jesse said that $1,000 per eye coral will be $250 per eye next year. There are some sites trying to make a public database but at least for now it is pointless. It's still impossible to stop someone from selling a coral and saying it's a Tyree just because it looks close. Hell you and I could each buy an eye of the same chalice and it looks completely different in our tanks due to placement, lighting, and params. You also need to be careful on the chalice craze because many of those photos are taken with a macro lens and under LED lighting and it will NEVER look like that in your tank. Two things I never understood where the over-priced chalice and over-priced zoa craze. I tried to get a couple high end zoa's and they are so damn small that you literally have to put your nose up against the glass to see the colors. Just not my cup of tea. I love sps and lps like blastos, scolly, lobo but I am not going to pay $140 for 3/4-1" frag of sps either. Some of the scolly are going for $400 and they are only 2-3" in diameter. You start getting into two completely different things. when you hit those levels it is no longer just reef keeping it's a making money and collectibles and that is no fun for me. JMO

There was at least one guy at the columbus swap last fall that was giving out paper work (no idea what kind!) for some crazy expensive zoa's or palys. I am not into having named corals really, if it is pretty then I will buy it even if it has no name (and isn't real expensive).

I'm not buying them just to sell them. I find chalice corals extrememly beautiful, and Tyree has some of the best. I just want to make sure I am paying a fair price for what I am getting.

Half the time anymore Tyree doesn't have the best...its just that people give him their best pieces so that he can put his name on them to jack the prices up. With that said you can find nice chalices that look like crap in LFS's and will color up in your home tank. Elmer's occasionally has frags of chalices in their 9.99-29.99 tanks that don't look so great but will color up nicely.

I got rid of most of my chalice frags a while back, but did keep some of my nicer pieces. I still have:

- Miami Hurricane Chalice
- Exotic Frag's Emerald Mummy Eye Chalice
- Rommel's (Ultimate's) Watermelon Chalice
- Tub's Alien Eye Chalice

I have lineage for those... My Steel Blue Chalice is the same Echinopora lamellosa as the Tyree Steel Blue, but I do not have lineage for it. All but the Rommel's Watermelon are large enough to be fragged if it something you would be interested in. I still am looking to add a Bazooka Joe and Bubble Gum Monster... maybe a few others, but need a bigger tank before I can do that. LOL

Usually Aquaworld's prices aren't that far off what the going rate is. Also, if you can find a better "market price" for the piece, you can always tell them and try to negotiate a better/fairer price. In my experience with them, they've always been good with their pricing and size of frags.

As mentioned above, Mike (The Captive Reef) used to have an impressive chalice collection. However, I'm not sure how much he still has. I know he's recently been transitioning to primarily SPS.
