Anyone here use basically just a blue spectrum?

Search "bigfishLpond", that is a buddy whole has had a 80g deep blue for 2 years, and uses 7 blue plus and 1 purple plus. He was one of the gents at the tag market we had local today selling. I picked up 7 great lookin zoas last week. There is a case for blues in that thread.

It's silly to argue it can't be done. Again like said above, let's see proof that it does not work.

Do you have a link for the bigfishLpond?

I agree. Silly to argue it can't be done.
I'm still waiting for that proof myself.

I just hope it comes with a 2 year min. experience and a good health colorful zoa shot.

Now the point is how that will actually de done and what will be the results of zoas morphed under blue light after the 2 year period.

I would think that if the person is OK and happy with the results, why not?
We all have different tastes anyway.
Not a big deal, if the zoas can survive, right?

I always thought white light was mainly for aesthetics.

I currently run an ATI sunpower 6x54w fixture with 5 blue+ and one coral plus bulb. I also have a blue led strip light for dawn/dusk before the t5s kick on.

Corals grow well and look good in my opinion. I've been running my tank like this for about 8 months now. I can post pics if anyone is interested.

Yes, pics are always welcome! :D

I've had the same bulb configuration over my 75gal zoa tank for a short period of time in the past. I added one more Coral Plus because I noticed some of the zoas were morphing and loosing/changing some of their pigments. The pink zoas were looking grayish. Some of the reds were loosing their fluorescence too. Some zoas were looking pale. After the second Coral Plus was added most their color slowly came back to normal.

Blue Plus is a wonderful bulb and with a great PAR. It gives a beautiful pop over some of the fluorescent pigments in zoas, but I particularly don't like to see the polyps changing to that type of morph. My goal is mainly to keep the morph to a minimum and try to have the same colors as when I first introduced them into the system.

One of the best growth rates I've had with my ATI Power Module system had one 6500K GE bulb in the middle, a while ago. Too bad it becomes too yellow in that exactly spot where the bulb is and 2 of the GE bulbs in a 6 bulb combo is just too much yellow for my taste. I like the crispy white look, and with 2 Coral Plus bulbs I could find a common denominator for a nice growth and better look. Still not that crispy white though. It's towards the pink side of white.

Today I have 2 KZ Coral Light (~10000K) and 6 Blue Plus in that same system. Some times I remember the GE 6500K bulb and think about adding it back with one of the KZ Coral light to see how it looks. I think the KZ looks more crispy white than the ATI Coral Plus. At the same time I avoid changing too many bulbs without a real need.

Grandis, I don't have the link off hand, that's why I mentioned the search. But I'll see if I can't dig it up.

He has had this tank up for over a year, and had to just break it down due to unfortunate outside of reef circumstances. I'm pretty positive he used 7 ATI blue plus, and 1 purple plus for a little pink.

He has about 15 to 20 morphs, the last page shows some Sunny D's and space monsters he grew from small frags. As well as a some aqua cultured sps from frags.

Please just observe, I know he is pretty bummed about starting over and the reasons behind the move. Please, no comments there. He is a good fellow clubby and I don't wana drag him into the convo.

That is so interesting!!!
How long exactly he had that set up?

You need to bring him to the conversation!

I would like to know how fast they were growing and so on.
Would be interesting to have an idea and compare to a warmer spectrum.
FAST depends, if there is no comparison...
There is a lot to ask... I think this thread would go crazy if he could find some time to join.

Would be great to see she pictures of the zoas with flash.
That way it's easier to have an idea of the morphing.

With that many Blue Plus bulbs the PAR was very good and the morph doesn't look too bad.
It would be kinda hard to adapt those corals/zoas to a new system with some white bulbs though.
We need to know more…

I'll try to find some time to read the thread!
Was that the reason why you are asking around?

Why does he needs to star over? Did he have a crash?

Perhaps if he knows how welcome he is here things would be different!
Call him!

My wife runs two tanks, one frag tank and one shrimp fuge for her babies. I have observed over the past year the upper fuge tank displaying no spots of algae even though same system. Further to this we keep an AI nano light above the fuge and typically do not turn on whites and keep the blues on solely. Her 30 gallon frag tank has a reefbreaders light with full spec LEDs, supplemented by two 24" t5's (10k and actinic). Being that both tanks have zoas, and saw no difference per say in the all blue tank, I stopped ramping up the reds/greens/violets/whites, and just trying blues on the RB light. I have also replaced both t5s with blue plus bulbs. She has almost 40 types of zoa colonies, and now we wait and keep our fingers crossed.

hey there,

I am running three 80w Blue Plus and one Fiji Purple, along with a 56 RB and 14 blue LED on a 150g, corals look great and growth is good. Not sure how long ago I took the CW LED offline but been well over six months

I ran a 75g with 3 blue plus and 1 purple plus for 3 years. It's not the same as blue light that I thought this thread was started on. Actinics with t-5 are blue. Blue plus or blue special bulbs are still quite white in comparison. The only pics I have from that time period were on another reefing site that has shut down, but I can tell you that my lps were awesome, sps were growing out of the water, and zoas/shrooms were going crazy multiplying. But again, different than just actinics or straight blue leds.

My original meaning was not solely actinic. I was referring to running ATI blue plus type bulbs. Aquablue specials are much more white however.

Sorry, if I wasn't so clear originally. I would like to run 2 true actinics (or 3) and 4 blue plus (or 3). That is basically what I was inquiring about.

ATI blue plus

<a href="http://s842.photobucket.com/user/thestomp1978/media/Mobile%20Uploads/3DED30A8-39CF-4BA7-943C-EB1B5FA19368_zpsskkcgj4s.png.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz344/thestomp1978/Mobile%20Uploads/3DED30A8-39CF-4BA7-943C-EB1B5FA19368_zpsskkcgj4s.png" border="0" alt=" photo 3DED30A8-39CF-4BA7-943C-EB1B5FA19368_zpsskkcgj4s.png"/></a>

ATI aquablue special

<a href="http://s842.photobucket.com/user/thestomp1978/media/Mobile%20Uploads/8B3E0ECE-1758-4F62-8AD5-5813BEE590F9_zpsz2dvwuqo.png.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz344/thestomp1978/Mobile%20Uploads/8B3E0ECE-1758-4F62-8AD5-5813BEE590F9_zpsz2dvwuqo.png" border="0" alt=" photo 8B3E0ECE-1758-4F62-8AD5-5813BEE590F9_zpsz2dvwuqo.png"/></a>

ATI true actinic

<a href="http://s842.photobucket.com/user/thestomp1978/media/Mobile%20Uploads/AF6F413A-6E29-4B23-B165-F5DA23C18157_zps5cx9suiw.png.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz344/thestomp1978/Mobile%20Uploads/AF6F413A-6E29-4B23-B165-F5DA23C18157_zps5cx9suiw.png" border="0" alt=" photo AF6F413A-6E29-4B23-B165-F5DA23C18157_zps5cx9suiw.png"/></a>

And jus to add, ATI coral plus (which some will say actually looks more white than the aquablue special)

That clarification changes all pallobi!
The "just blue spectrum" report in the title confused us.

If that's the case,then i think it's possible.
Like you said and showed with the ati bulb diagramm, blue plus bulb isn't only a blue spectrum bulb.

Have tried having zoas under only blue plus(6x39) and they were fine.
Grew at a normal rate and the colors were very nice.
What i have to point,is that in my tank(important factor) when i changed the combination and added 2 aquablues they grew-made more heads,a bit faster.
Spectrum remaind on the "blue side" but had a bit more white-yellow
So again i agree with grandis that white is needed.

So to sum it up,i think zoas can live under even only blue plus(ati).:)

Blue plus types have been fine IME
