anyone id this?

anyone know. it has been growing in my reef for about a yr and a half and i have four big patches of it now. it is slow growing and has a very tough and rough texture. i moved some to my 8 gal cube and i almost toppled my reef because i had to pull so hard to get it to break free from the rock. lol. any help would be great.

Kaineo its a red algae and those can be tough to identify to a genus level without microscopic evaluation. Of the reds that commonly occur in reef tanks its most like Halymenia. But the species of Halymenia that I've seen usually had larger fronds. As far as maching it to keys using pictures genus Galaxaura specie marginata is as close as I can come. Galaxaura is Y-branched and I can't make that out from your pictures. A close-up of the branch ends would help to confirm.
