Anyone know what happened to Bargian Basement Pet Shop in Akron

to give you an idea of why you shouldnt go there...because of them i am battling a HUGE hair algae and cyano algae problem in my 90G bowfront because when they setup the tank they were taking care of it for my dad and the only filtration they had in the sump was 2 pieces of branch LR that maybe totaled 15 lbs, a filter sock, and the only thing thats doing a good job in the sump...the PM Bullet 1 protein skimmer, they told me that i shouldnt need anymore filtration and that to level it out i should keep dosing the tank with additives to take the algae and other problems away...they have no idea about fuges or anything, so my dad gave me the tank and now i have had to tear it down 3 times in the past 2 months because i cant get the algae to go away, and thats with minimal feedings, and the lights only being on 8 hours a day, now i really have to tear it down, and change his sump over to a fuge, im thinking about just buying PM's fuge and just taking out the sump

I just received a post card from a place called Captain Larry's Aquarium. It looks exactly like the ones I used to receive from Wet Pets. My guess is that there is new ownership and it moved to a new location:

Captain Larry's Aquarium
2079 East Market Street - suite 7
330-733-5955

If anyone in the Akron area goes out there please post and let us know what the store is like.

This is the new "Bargain Basement" location but it's not on the lower level any more, so the new name. It is closer to the highway than the old location, and for now it is totally saltwater, no freshwater fish.

Got any better directions?
It's just a little to the southeast of I76 on E.Market St. (Rt. 18). If you exit from I 76, you'll pass Mogadore Rd. and then go about 500-600 feet.

Hi All,

I told you they would show up in the near future under a different name. Man, from a business standpoint I don't know how they keep bouncing back. Ya think their vendors would know their routine by now and not sell to them.

Dave

I have tried calling them 3 times this week and everytime I get an answering machine. I left my number and a message to call me back but still nothing. I will keep everyone posted.

I called once and got through, talked for a while. I suppose they are still primarily a tank maintenance company so that is why they could do without a storefront for as long as it takes, have short hours, and why they can keep their prices low. If they don't find a landlord willing to make a deal, they can go elsewhere. Back in the '90's these people were C-SEA's biggest donator, and before that were big supporters of the Akron clubs, but I think they may have gotten tired of the politics, whatever those are.

Rhodophyta, basicaly your saying that this place is a waist of time trying to go there....

Not at all! I'm not sure what your take is, I'm guessing you might want to only visit big high priced stores with extended convenient hours, then for you, you would be right. C-SEA does owe thanks to these people for the club's continuous existence, since for a while in the '90's they kept the club in the black with their generous donations while other sources of industry support were fading. If you are not adverse to a bargain, then Captain Larry's should be a good place to look.

ok just found da Capt'n

:bounce1: :bounce2: :bounce3: :bounce1: :bounce2: :bounce3:

On East Market, next to the Mcdonalds and Arby's

They actually have a pretty decent set up. All saltwater, so thats a bonus.

Corals included zoas, polyps, softies, some sps, a few anemones

a clam tank, maximas and cro's

Inverts, several varieties of hermits, shrimp, snails, sea horses

for Fish i saw a huge porcupine puffer, clowns, angels, tangs, anglers, damsles, bicolors :fish2: :fish2:

better selection of live rock, categories from different regions

Prices were decent, about the same as before:thumbsup:

Finally found it. The live rock bins are so much better than before. They have a 18 or so inch Puffer. He is really neat.

They had this fish called a Walking Bat fish, Weriod fish but interesting.

The store looks very promising and I will check in there every so often...
