seems rather hard to keep. it popped up on my brothers lr about 6 months ago, since then i have tried three times to get it to live in my tank.

any idea to what it is good?bad?

The red stuff with orange spots again. I have seen several threads posted lately with this stuff and subscribed to them, but have yet to see an id. It is likely that the orange spots are reproductive structures, but beyond that I cant help sorry.

If you try to remove it does it come off easily, is it slimy at all, or is it hard and calcearous like coraline?

I'm with David, we're seeing more of this but no one has been able to find a similar photo in a book or online. Its a definite mystery.

its not hard. it is softer than bubble algae. and seems to recover if you damage it. spores are not released if it is pooped. it seems to be almost solid?

--It originally came out of Fiji live rock.

Sarah you know what we're lookin at? Its coraline encrusted Botryocladia psuedodichitoma. :) If you look closely you'll see evidence of the red bubbles on the underside.

Here's a link with a pic. Basically a type of red bubble algae. Which as I've found out can spred fairly quickly.

thats it! in my brothers tank, it has a stalk like that... mabe since my tankhas a lot of flow they have not developed that.

so should i take it out?

There's always a chance that the species name I provided isnt it exactly, or the growth form is a little different due to varying tank conditions.

so should i take it out?

This depends, in my experience it does spred although not very quickly atleast for me. The reds do seem to be more tasty for herbivors so control may or may not be an issue later. How much do you like macros?
