It seems that everyone I know that has tried a group of Bartletts anthias has had the whole group turn male and then usually kill each other. Is this the norm?
It seems to be the norm that most of them eventually turn male. I had a group of 4 Bartletts. One turned male and killed/harassed to death the original male. The third one seemed to become a large female or subdominant male but hid alot and eventually died. I then had the male and a smaller female that stayed female for a year or more but then died. The male was the lone survivor of the group. He probably lived 3-4 years total with the other 3 dying after 2 years to about 3 years for the remaining. It seems that if the female is quite a bit smaller than the male they will stay female for longer. You might want to try one male with a group of 2 or 3 much smaller females.
